Not everyone wants the latest or biggest phone that can take fantastic photos in near darkness. What they do want is something that can make and receive calls and take the odd photo or three and browse the Internet while out and about for things like when will that bus or train arrive and possibly...

This is a combined review of the new Google Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5 5G because underneath they both have the same tech. So the question is do you spend $799 or $999 for a 5G enabled Pixel – or just get the back-to-basics Pixel 4a 4G at $599. There are two schools of thought here.- Build quality – 5 is tops with an aluminium frame and back, Battery life – average 1+ days, Camera – good but not class-leading, Android – Pure with 3 years updates
- Display – OLED is great, but these both lack brightness and colour gamut, Camera lacks telephoto – ultra-wide is not very useful

Google's latest affordable Android puts software first - for better or worse- Streamlined Android experience with guaranteed updates, Camera quality competes with flagship rivals, All-day battery life
- Few standout features on the hardware front, Plastic build gives away budget nature, Expandable storage still a no-go

But they are pricier, and for what you’re paying the Pixel 4a is a great handset. Though if you look beyond Google’s offerings you can get some very tempting alternatives for similar money, such as the OnePlus Nord and Moto G 5G Plus.- Flagship-quality camera, Great interface, Good value
- Plastic back, 60Hz refresh rate, Average battery life

The Pixel 4a is Google’s affordable and entry-level smartphone with a £349 price tag and, of course, it features the Pixel camera.- Lightweight design, Smooth and fluid software experience, Great camera software and processing
- No wireless charging, Only one camera lens, Portrait mode not always accurate

There’s a thing magicians do called misdirection, where they catch your eye with one thing while something more important happens elsewhere. Whether modern smartphones count as magic is probably a little too philosophical for here, but I certainly got the misdirection feeling from the Pixel 4a 5G.- Affordably priced, Excellent camera performance, Android has some truly useful features, Great battery life
- You pay more for faster 5G, No waterproofing or wireless charging, Plastic design is unremarkable

If Google did not release the Pixel 5, I would have given you a clear recommendation to buy the Pixel 4a 5G. But this is not a fault of the Pixel 4a 5G, which is not only convincing as a smartphone, but as an overall concept.- Camera quality, Look and feel, Vibration motor and speaker, Performance, Android 11
- No IP certification, 60 Hz refresh rate, A Pixel 5 clone
