The Google Pixel 3XL: 6 Months Later

As we get closer to Google I/O 2019, we wanted to take a look back at their polarizing flagship: the Pixel 3XL. We say polarizing as it had its fair of issues/complaints in either design and/or performance at launch.

Google Pixel 3 XL review

The Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL have been out for almost a year and it’s time to take a look back at how the devices have performed and if they’re still a good buy. A device developed and sold by Google is always going to have higher expectations than others on the market because the Pixel is...

Google Pixel 3 XL review

Giant Pixel. Now in its third generation of Pixel smartphones, Google wants to tempt potential buyers away from its competitors with exclusive software features. However, affordable prices are a thing of the past as the Pixel 3 XL costs up to $999.
Pros:
  • sturdy and stable case, good cameras, numerous LTE bands, exclusive software features, plenty of accessories, colour accurate display, no throttling under sustained load, impressive speakers, decent battery life
Cons:
  • no face unlock, some modern video features are missing, expensive, large notch, mediocre call quality for a flagship, inaccurate GPS

Google Pixel 3 XL: Brilliant but Google is treading water

If there's one thing I wanted from the Google Pixel 3 XL, it's that it didn't make a repeat of last year. The Pixel 2 XL was an otherwise cracking phone but its flawed display held it back from greatness.
Pros:
  • Fabulous camera
  • Superb performance
  • Android Pie goodness
Cons:
  • Mediocre battery life
  • No secondary rear camera

Google Pixel 3 review: Brains over brawn

The Pixel 3 doesn't stand out in any specific areas - and lags behind in one or two - but what it does do is bring together all of its functions to form a whole that feels genuinely smart, deploying clever AI and software tweaks to create something that's genuinely useful.
Pros:
  • Outstanding camera
  • Incredibly smart AI features
  • Gorgeous design
Cons:
  • Disappointing battery life
  • Not the fastest

  • Awesome Camera
  • Strong Performance
  • Clean
  • Android Pie
Cons:
  • No Expandable Storage
  • Big Notch On The XL
  • New Navigation Elements May Take Getting Used To

Google Pixel 3 XL review

The Google Pixel 3 XL’s biggest departure from last year’s model is the feel of the software. And, well, you’ll get that with the 2 XL anyway. However, we also get a better screen, all-glass design and a great new selfie array, also to blame for that whacking great big notch in the display. This phone takes some of the most natural daylight shots with its rear camera too. However, the lack of extra tech does start to show in its zoomed photos and when you shoot in very dark conditions. The Pixel 3 XL is not a grand step on from the 2 XL. But it’s a top showcase for what Google’s software engineers are up to.
Pros:
  • Android as Google intended
  • Natural-looking camera processing
  • Fab selfies
Cons:
  • Giganto-notch is distracting
  • Camera beaten by rivals in some situations
