Google Nest Wifi review

Google Nest Wifi is attractive, easy to set up and offers some handy features - including the fact that the access point is also a smart speaker. That helps justify the price, but Wi-Fi 6 is missing and the speeds aren’t anything to get overly excited about. This won't matter for most homes, though.

Google Nest Wifi review: Fantastic mesh network with Google Assistant bonus

For those looking to extend the reach of the internet around their home or improve Wi-Fi weak spots, Google's Nest Wifi mesh system is a fantastic option. It not only offers lovely designs but it is incredibly user friendly, simple to setup and it performs exactly how you would want it to. And that's before you consider the excellent integration of the built-in speaker and Google Assistant in the Wifi point, essentially making the point a two-in-one device and a brilliant addition for anyone with existing Google Home devices or looking to start a Google Home system.

Excellent unobtrusive design; Super-simple setup; Easy to use and manage; Fantastic Google Assistant integration; Reliable performance; Good parental controls;

Router doesn't have speaker or built-in Google Assistant; Lack of ports on router; Not the cheapest; Deeper control requires second app;

Google Nest Wifi Review

When we reviewed the original Google Wifi mesh system in 2016, it earned high marks for its aesthetics, ease of use, and overall performance. Google's new two-piece Nest Wifi system ($269) follows suit, along with offering a few nice upgrades, including more powerful hardware, a softer, more living-room-friendly design, and built-in Google Assistant capabilities. Although it's a solid performer, it can't keep pace with the Editors' Choice TP-Link Deco M9 Plus. Google Integration Google sent us the $269 two-piece Nest Wifi system, which includes a router and a satellite node (Google calls them Wifi points) and covers homes of up to 3,800 square feet (2,200 for the router, 1,600 for the point). There is also a three-piece set (one router and two points) for $349 that covers 5,400 square feet, and you can buy additional points for $149 each. If you live in a smaller house or an apartment, you can buy just the router for $169. To compare, the $299.99 two-piece TP-Link Deco M9 Plus sy...

The Google Nest Wifi is a user-friendly 802.11ac mesh system that uses sleek components to deliver Wi-Fi to all corners of your home.

Solid throughput performance in testing; Stylish design; Easy to install; Built-in Google Assistant voice technology

Lacks dedicated backhaul band; No anti-malware tools; Advanced settings require a separate app; No USB ports

Does what's supposed to do...

One is enough for a smaller house or an apartment, IF positioned strategically. If you hook it up to your router and have it sitting next to it you'll achieve nothing. I have 25square house and two units (router+point) cover the whole thing. It doesn't have an USB port and it doesn't need it. It's not (and not supposed to be) a media player, no UI for TV, so no way to view/listen to your files anyways. What it does have is an additional ethernet port, so an additional device (media player?) can connect to it and have a fast wired connection. As a base for a mesh system it does exactly what it needs to do. You need more coverage? Buy more “point” units.

So easy to set up!

Bought this as an extension to an existing two unit Nest. It was so easy to set up and the blind spot vanished and was replaced instantly by a strong wifi signal with no impact on the existing mesh set up. We can now have multiple people streaming their favourite movies online in different rooms.

Great for wifi but ...

This is a great product for creating a wifi mesh network however there are two issues which prevent it bing five star: (1) if you turn off voice activation it lights up bright orange and this light cannot be turned off (2) in Australia it does not play apple music.

Almost Perfect

This router is almost perfect. Setup is relatively straightforward, however if you need to use some of the advanced options the user interface is not always easy to use and it's only available via the smartphone app.Performance has been good and almost 100% reliable. I had a weird issue recently where none of my wired network was working but I couldn't nail down if it was the router or my switch. Ultimately it fixed itself but it was quite annoying for a couple of days.Only other thing I would like to see is the ability to connect the access points to my wired network as well to maximise performance.

Great Coverage

I have a room out the back of the house that was getting poor wifi from the modem and google mesh in the house. After adding this one I now have great wifi right throughout the house and outbuildings.

Nest wifi no good if you use Microsoft Teams

I’ve used Google wifi for years and loved it. Recently I added Nest wifi to my network but have had issues from the start. Installing the nodes was annoying and it wouldn’t connect seamlessly. However my biggest issue was that as soon as I connected Nest wifi, none of my colleagues could see my video when I was on a Teams call. I’ve worked out that if I disable cloud services it helps drastically or if I make my device the priority it somewhat helps. But then my wife can’t make Teams calls. I’ve ended up plugging the cable in when making calls. Super disappointed with Nest wifi.
