As the first telephoto zoom for the fledgling XF system, the new Fujifilm XF 55-200mm F3.5-4.8 R LM OIS is a solid rather than spectacular performer, offering an appealing combination of good image quality, excellent construction and handling, and fair value for money.

In April 2013, this 55–200mm f/3.5–4.8 OIS zoom ($699, street) joined the Fujinon 18–55mm f/2.8–4 zoom ($699, street) to round out a relatively fast and useful XF-series optical system for Fujifilm's impressive X-series of ILCs. How good is it?

The XF 55-200mm F3.5-4.8 R LM OIS is a relatively portable, well-made telephoto zoom that delivers consistently fine images. Focusing is essentially silent and reasonably fast, at least with static subjects, and the optical image stabilisation works very well. It's a natural complement to the XF 18-55mm F2.8-4 R LM OIS zoom.

I tried this lens out on a trip to Iceland. We had a lot of rain, and mist.Shots in bright light are excellent. XE 1 does not focus this lens in flat light except at 55mm. After that it cannot achieve focus.

Very high image quality with this lens. Fuji system is my surprise of the year. I will buy another Fuji lens soon, a 10-20mm F:2.8 zoom to expand my focal range to 10mm-200mm with Fuji lens. Louis V.
