Just a half-step up from its 2-year-old entry-level X-A5 mirrorless, Fujifilm recasts most of the components of that model into a slightly more advanced package. But it's still intended it for the entry-level enthusiast who wants something smaller and more flexible than a dSLR with no compromise on quality.

The inclusion of an EVF puts the X-T100 in a class above the X-A5 and makes it a more worthwhile purchase for outdoor photographers in the Southern Hemisphere, where bright sunlight can make monitor screens unreadable.

Let’s not get too complicated here: a camera’s job is to take photos, and the X-T100 does that very well. To get better performance in Fuji land you’d need to stump up several hundred quid more for the X-T20, and while the cheaper X-A5 should take similar images, the lack of EVF there rules it out for me straight away. The fact that it’s also small, light, beautifully built and attractive is another bonus, as is the well-thought-out control scheme. Like most X Series snappers, this is a camera that handles excellently. It’s not perfect, but at £619 including a lens, you wouldn’t expect it to be. And where it matters, it gets it spot on.

Depending on how you look at it, the Fujifilm X-T100 is either the company's most advanced camera for beginners, or its most basic premium model. It slots into Fuji's mirrorless X-Series lineup, between the entry-level and the excellent X-T20.

The Fujifilm XT100 is a capable entry-level camera at a competitive price, which delivers good-looking images with a feature-set that'll suit beginners and satisfy more advanced photographers alike.

The Fujifilm X-T100's classic SLR-style design definitely turns some heads. In fact, when recently out shooting with the camera, I was approached by a Sony a6000 owner who wanted to know more about it. The body is well-built, though the faux leather is a bit slippery.
