Canon PowerShot SX610 HS

The Canon PowerShot SX610 HS ($249.99) is an affordable compact camera with a long 18x zoom lens. It's loaded with features, including Wi-Fi and Canon's fun Creative Shot mode, but its 20-megapixel image sensor does more to detract from image quality than it does to add to it.
Pros:
  • Compact
  • 18x zoom lens
  • Quick focus
  • Creative Shot mode
  • Crisp rear LCD
  • Wi-Fi
Cons:
  • Image quality suffers at moderate ISOs
  • Slow continuous drive mode

Canon PowerShot SX610 HS Review

The Canon PowerShot SX610 HS is an attractive compact camera with an 18x zoom lens, but image quality takes a step back from last year's edition. If you want a long zoom camera in this price range, you're better served with the SX600 HS ( at Amazon) , which is a year old but still available at retail. Our favorite pocket superzoom is more expensive, but we think that the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS50 ($350.00 at Amazon) is more than worth its asking price, and that makes it our Editors' Choice. Design and FeaturesThe SX610 HS ($258.98 at Amazon)  measures just 2.4 by 4.1 by 1.1 inches (HWD) and weighs 6.7 ounces. It slides into a pocket with ease, thanks to its slim body. The chassis incorporates both metal and plastic, but it feels solidly built nonetheless. The lines of its body are a little more angular than those of the SX600 HS (2.4 by 4.1 by 1 inch,...

Pros:

  • Built-in Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity
  • Very easy to operate
  • Shutter lag performance is very good in normal lighting conditions
  • Full HD video recording
  • 20MP of resolution
  • Variety of special effect photos are fun to use
  • Automatic zoom follows a moving subject,...
Cons:
  • Image quality could be better
  • Small 1/2.3-inch image sensor
  • Plenty of noise in images shot at mid-ISO range
  • Continuous shot modes are slow
  • Shutter lag with flash is poor
  • No aperture priority or manual control options
  • Control buttons on back of camera are too small and too tightly set to camera...

Canon PowerShot SX610 HS

Last year's PowerShot SX600 HS offered a good balance of performance and features at a reasonable price, so it's perhaps unsurprising that Canon hasn't altered this recipe much for the new SX610 HS. It features the same 18x optically stabilised lens giving a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 25-450mm.

Wi-Fi

I am just learning how to use this camera, but it seems pretty intuitive. I plan to take it on my next trip , so I will know better later. One stumbling block for me is my current inability to upload into my desktop. I still have Windows XP and it is compatible with 7 and 8.
Pros:
  • Nice feel in my hands
Cons:
  • Problem with uploading into computer

While Canon's PowerShot SX610 HS camera has reached the 20 megapixels of resolution threshold -- a level of resolution that seemed unlikely for most point and shoot cameras just a few years ago -- just reaching 20MP isn't enough to guarantee that the SX610 is a great camera.

Canon SX610 HS

A small PowerShot digital camera, for those who do not know a PowerShot can be little larger than an IXUS the smallest of Canoncameras or as large as the small end of Canons DSLR range, so here it is at the IXUS end of the range.
