Review – Canon S90, Part 3: Image Quality

No camera is perfect, and the S90 is as far from it as the best of them, yet it is still eminently useful. I will not be returning it nor selling it off, and I foresee it giving me a few good years of use as a pocket cam.
Pros:
  • Small
  • light and pocketable
  • Good JPEGs and RAW files (superb for a P&S
  • Impressive high ISO performance for a P&S
  • Fast f/2 aperture at the wide end
  • Superb auto WB which can be manually fine-tuned
  • PASM shooting modes plus very useful Custom mode
  • Highly customisable buttons and dials (including...
Cons:
  • Manual mode disables auto ISO (Canon
  • give us auto ISO in M mode!
  • Manual focus offers a poor distance scale and no indication of depth of field
  • Manual focus mode "disappears" when camera goes into sleep mode
  • No hyperfocal focus mode
  • No way to turn off sleep mode
  • No RAW shooting in modes other...

Canon S90 Review

A big step forward from the S1 model, and a very competitive digital SLR.
Pros:
  • Colors are off
  • On five different S2 Pro bodies I've seen, I've seen five slightly different color interpretations
  • Some were off subtly, one was quite blue, another quite reddish in tint
  • You can't judge color by the color LCD, The protective cover has to be removed to see well .

Canon Powershot S90

Using the S90, the combination of user-friendly technology, small size and sheer DSLR power is quite addictive. With this new S-series model Canon has raised the bar on compact camera technology, but there's more to a camera than circuitry and some handling issues need to be addressed.

Reviews: Canon PowerShot S90: Review

The 10.0 megapixel image capture and movie recording specs, while impressive, are not something that helps the S90 stand out on value when compared with other digital compact cameras on the market.

Canon S90 review

The Canon S90 is the latest compact DSLR replacement from Canon - the little brother to the successful Canon G11 . Profits are squeezed to the point of asphyxiation in the compact camera market at the moment; tough economic times mean your typical 'point and shoot' compact owner doesn't feel the...

Canon PowerShot S90

An exceptional compact camera for demanding enthusiasts and affluent point-and-clickers, but it doesn't surpass Panasonic's LX3.

I own Nikon D300 and I dare to say I am extremely fussy when it comes to picture quality. For example I would not rate the Panasonic TZ5, 6, or 7 at all. I use to own Canon Powershot S70 and picture was acceptable for a compact point and shoot camera.
Pros:
  • picture quality superb
  • handling the best of all compacts
  • could rival many DSLRs
Cons:
  • woried if the pop up flash would last if dust gets in
  • Holding the camera may surprise you when the pop up flash push your finger away

Getting a compact camera noticed above the swell of £150 mid-range snappers is difficult, but as soon as you lift it out of the box, the S90's aspirations towards miniature-DSLR quality are obvious.
