Canon Reintroduces The S Series, Photogs Shed A Tear

Canon has resurrected (wisely) the PowerShot S Series with the new S90. Wising up to the fact that there are consumers who want a pocket-sized camera that takes quality photos, not the point-and-shoot garbage we've been relegated to.

Canon PowerShot S90

It's been a while since the launch of the PowerShot S80 – 5 years to be precise. The PowerShot S90 is more than just a redesigned version of its predecessor – the S80. The camera offers functionality and usability that hasn't quite been implemented in any other S-series camera.

Canon PowerShot S90 Review

The arrival of the ‘affordable' digital SLR saw most manufacturers slowly withdrawing from the high end compact camera market, but recently models like the Canon G9/G10/G11 and Panasonic's LX3 have shown that there is still demand for pocketable cameras with real photographic controls.

Canon PowerShot S90 Review

I enjoyed taking pictures with the PowerShot S90. It takes excellent photos outdoors and very good pictures indoors as well. It has a high quality lens with minimal distortion. Leaving the flash off in most low light shooting situations was another bonus.
Pros:
  • Compact size
  • Fast lens
  • Very good images
Cons:
  • Slighty expensive
  • No HD movie mode
  • Shorter zoom range
