Great Beginner Camera

My son turned 10 a week after Christmas and he wanted a camera. We didn't have a lot of time so we looked at inexpensive cameras on line and then went out to Target and Wal-mart. We set a price limit of $75.00 if possible. What we found was Canon - PowerShot A490 Digital Camera.

Canon PowerShot A490 Review

I've taken pictures with lots of Canon digital cameras and one of the most interesting things about all those cameras was not their differences, but their similarities. Canon is the most modular of all the major camera manufacturers and their product development folks have a broad catalog of proven...

Canon PowerShot A490

Canon's PowerShot A3000 IS is AU$20 more than the A495 and has a better lens, a rechargeable battery, and image stabilisation, but honestly, we'd rather save the money and get the A495 or the A490.
Pros:
  • Excellent photos for its price
  • Reliable Auto mode
Cons:
  • Short battery life
  • Low-resolution LCD
  • Slow shooting performance
  • Very basic features

I bought the camera for about 8 months ago so I have tested it thoroughly. The image quality is good, good sharpness, shallow depth of field which I like. But not so much settings. ISO then? Well there we have one of the camera's weaker points: The noise comes at ISO 200 but images are still ok.

Canon PowerShot A490

Although most of the cameras I review are high-end models costing £200 and over, in these financially difficult times not everyone wants to spend that much money on a digital camera.
Pros:
  • Cheap
Cons:
  • No image stabilisation
  • slow autofocus
  • Limited shooting options
  • No 720p video

Need a battery charger to use this camera

I regret not returning this camera because I found out it takes double A batteries when I received it. Do not buy expensive disposable camera batteries they ware out in less than an hour of use. You will have to buy a 20$ battery charger that comes with double A batteries.
