Canon PowerShot A490
The new Powershot A490 is Canon's newest entry-level compact digicam. This stylish camera features a 10-Megapixel imaging sensor, Digic III image processor, a 2.5-inch LCD screen and Canon's Smart Auto mode which automatically picks all the camera's settings based on the current shooting conditions.

Canon PowerShot A490
The entry-level Canon PowerShot A490 is based around a ten megapixel, 1/2.3"-type CCD image sensor coupled to a 3.3x optical zoom lens that offers focal lengths ranging from a rather tight 37mm wide angle to a 122mm telephoto. Maximum aperture varies from f/3.0 to f/5.8 across the zoom range.

While it may be a very basic point-and-shoot compact , Canon's PowerShot A490 can take clear and vibrant photos that are very impressive considering its low price. It's the perfect camera to consider if you're on a budget but want to capture great quality images.
Pros:
- Good clarity and colours for such an inexpensive camera
- good battery life using AAs
- improved button layout over the PowerShot A480
Cons:
- Shutter button doesn't have a distinct two-step feel
- highlights were overexposed

Need a battery charger to use this camera
I regret not returning this camera because I found out it takes double A batteries when I received it. Do not buy expensive disposable camera batteries they ware out in less than an hour of use. You will have to buy a 20$ battery charger that comes with double A batteries.

Canon PowerShot A490
Although most of the cameras I review are high-end models costing £200 and over, in these financially difficult times not everyone wants to spend that much money on a digital camera.
Pros:
- Cheap
Cons:
- No image stabilisation
- slow autofocus
- Limited shooting options
- No 720p video

Canon PowerShot A490
Canon's PowerShot A3000 IS is AU$20 more than the A495 and has a better lens, a rechargeable battery, and image stabilisation, but honestly, we'd rather save the money and get the A495 or the A490.
Pros:
- Excellent photos for its price
- Reliable Auto mode
Cons:
- Short battery life
- Low-resolution LCD
- Slow shooting performance
- Very basic features
