Canon PowerShot Elph 500 HS Review: A Good Touchscreen Camera, With Caveats

If the idea of an almost-all-touchscreen camera appeals to you, the Canon PowerShot Elph 500 HS ($299 as of May 25, 2011) is one of the best

  • 3.2-inch touchscreen with good UI
  • Fun shooting modes
  • including 240fps video capture

Canon IXUS 310 HS review

Although the Canon IXUS 310 HS has very good image-capturing capabilities, it has some glaring negative points such as low battery life and average shooting speeds. I would suggest the Canon IXUS 220 HS instead, because of its slim form factor and superior night-time photography, and the fact that...

Canon PowerShot Elph 500 HS review

If the idea of an almost-all-touchscreen camera appeals to you, the Canon PowerShot Elph 500 HS is one of the best point and shoot options in that class. But it's becoming clear that touchscreen-operated cameras are a significantly different beast than traditional cameras with similar specs.
Pros:
  • 3.2-inch touchscreen with good UI
  • Fun shooting modes
  • including 240fps video capture
  • F2.0 lens with aperture priority mode
  • Very good image and video quality
Cons:
  • Touchscreen menus add a few steps
  • Subpar battery life

I don't love this camera

Good...not great! slow shutter, difficult navigation It's not easy to use at all... it has been dropped a time or two and everything seems to be intact. great size and weight. Maybe it's that me and the touch screen can't get along. I can never seem to get this camera to do what I want when i want.

Canon IXUS 310 HS Digital Camera Review

As my 100th match fizzled out without taking light, in my desperate attempts to light a romantic fire, I couldn't help taking another look over the pile of broken, unlit, unburnt, useless pile of ‘no name' brand matches.

Canon PowerShot ELPH 500 HS Review

Manufacturers are scrambling to find a cure for a common point-and-shoot malady – noisy, blurred images in low light conditions. Does Canon manage to solve the low light problem with the 500 HS? Not quite, but there's still a lot to say for this little point-and-shoot.
Pros:
  • Fast f/2 lens
  • Good 1080 HD video
  • Very good low light performance
Cons:
  • Finicky touchscreen
  • Somewhat expensive
  • Bulkier
  • heavier than average

This is Canon's best touchscreen camera yet, sporting a massive screen and plenty of features like HD video. It's not perfect, with a short battery life and only average shooting performance, but it's sure to win plenty of fans regardless.

  • Aperture and shutter priority controls
  • Great touchscreen
  • big and responsive
  • Good image quality
  • Nice bright lens
Cons:
  • Lens aperture not very wide at telephoto end
  • Short battery life
  • Fringing quite pronounced at full magnification

Canon IXUS 310 HS

Canon has released a bunch of cameras in the past with the HS tag, which simply denotes the camera has a backside-illuminated CMOS sensor and the Digic 4 image processor. They're designed to be better at picking up light in dim situations and let the camera be quick and speedy with its shooting.
Pros:
  • Aperture and shutter priority controls
  • Great touchscreen, big and responsive
  • Good image quality
  • Nice bright lens
Cons:
  • Lens aperture not very wide at telephoto end
  • Short battery life
  • Fringing quite pronounced at full magnification
