Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II

The Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II ($199.99 direct) is the standard kit lens that is bundled with APS-C Canon EOS D-SLR cameras . When you buy it along with a camera it only adds about $100 to the price, and at that price it's a bargain.

Sharp; Light; Inexpensive; Optically stabilized

Noticeable distortion; Front element rotates during focus; Plastic lens mount; Slow aperture

Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II Lens Review

The Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II Lens is the review-time-current version of Canon's least expensive APS-C DSLR kit lens (replacing the EF-S 18-55mm IS Lens ). While it is designed as a starter lens and leaves a lot to be desired , it is a good value when purchased in a kit.

I've read lately that it compares with the ten times more expensive Canon EFS 17-55 IS, that they are equal in IQ . That said I'd swap it with you for that or an L lens!

Sharper than the Canon 17-40/4 L handheld because of the IS, in fact it beats all Canon wide lenses because of this; Load up with two of them in case one breaks though they're sturdier than they feel and look; The plastic mount doesn't matter - because it's so light you'd never need a metal mount!

It doesn't look or feel professional; that's all

Ok for snapshots

This is often the standard lens that comes with many of the DSLR's. At first glance, it's great that it's lightweight and has good focal length range. It's ok for everyday snapshots but ends there.

Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II review by AdamH

This kit lens came along with my body and for the price its image quality is great. Even though the AF is kinda noisy, when you look at the price, it doesn't matter.

Great kit lens/Decent image quality

Noisy AF

When I had received the lens I was immediately excited, it was because my original 18-55mm lens had broke and I really needed a new 18-55mm lens for my photography class. Now at first, I wasn't sure if I should buy a new one because I thought I can get my lens fixed for a cheap price due to the...

Excellent Lens well worth the money

I needed a cheap good quality lens for basic phtography. I have macro and telephoto lens but nothing for taking pictures at home or landscapes. This lens fitted the bill prefectly.

Durable; Great Picture Quality; Lightweight

"The Canon EF-S 15-55mm: A kit lens that will not disappoint!"

There are dozens of myths in photography. Like zoom or megapixels. Or "you need a DSLR to take good photographs" and finally "kit lenses are generally not very good lenses". Every myth is built around some sort of reality, and I am not here to say it's all a lie, but it certainly isn't all true...

well above average image quality; cheap; image-stabilisation

all-plastic build; some (but very little) chromatic aberration and barrel distortion

Great sharp lens

My original 18-55mm lens had developed a sticking problem after many years of excellent picture taking. I ordered and received quickly the same lens as it is my every day go to lens. Works beautifully.
