Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens Review
The Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens combines a very useful zoom range with image stabilization in a light and well-performing package . Keep in mind that the 17-85 IS is an "EF-S" lens and only works on EF-S compatible Canon EOS bodies such as the **D and Digital Rebel / ***D Series.

Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM
Another addition to Canon's slowly growing collection of EF-S lenses designed exclusively for the 300D, 350D 20D and now 30D cameras, this 17-85mm model is aimed at advanced amateur photographers as an extended standard zoom lens. We take a look at how it performs.
Pros:
- Excellent resolution holds up throughout the focal range
- IS system helps a lot in low light
- The lens makes a good replacement for kit lenses
- The focal range ideal for a walkabout lens
Cons:
- Distortion is bad at the widest settings and a little CA creeps in
- Front lip is prone to damage
- Hood is an optional extra

Canon EF-S 17-85MM f4-5.6 IS USM
The Canon EF-S 17-85MM f4-5.6 IS USM is the lens that I bought to replace the Sigma 18-125mm F3.5-5.6 DC. It was Canon's first EF-S zoom lens with IS (image stabilizer). It was significantly more expensive than the Sigma it replaced.

Canon EF-S 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM Lens Review
Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM was release in mid-August of 2004 and on APS-C type cameras, for which it was specifically designed, has a field of view equivalent to that of a 27-136mm lens on a full-frame camera.

Cons:
- After 4 years use the cable between aperture and camera house broke
- Repair by Canon expensive
- Managed to change it my self for 28 USD and 3 hours work following instructions on the internet
- Distortion at wide end

Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM review by makcv113
I put image quality for both Pro and Con just because it isn't that good but also isn't that bad. I use this as a street/walkaround lens. The only lens I would get to replace this is the Canon EF-S 15-85mm.
Pros:
- IS
- zoom range
- image quality
Cons:
- image quality
- poorly built
- F4 aperture

Recently unleashed, the Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 USM IS is one of the more interesting consumer standard zoom lenses in the market. It is often considered as an upgrade path from the basic EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 kit zoom.

Great lens but for issues with build quality
This lens is somewhat of a mixed bag. Optically, it's a great step up from the kit lens, and a reasonable compromise on price vs. performance. The image stabilisation is great, if not quite as great as the marketing material might suggest.

Good till it goes wrong!
I have used this lens which came with my camera for 10 years. It has had little use and was well looked after. Provided good results. The zoom was a bit of a problem when looking up or down as it would start to slide, so has to be held to avoid booking in or out. Until it goes wrong!.....
