I purchased my 17-85mm when I got my Canon 60D last November, at the time the current selling price of the lens alone was £350, it offers the same specification as the Canon 18-55mm and that the same of any kit lens including the Nikon 18-55mm, being F3.5-5.6, up close the lens is big, heavy, has a...

A tank that can do almost everything
I have had this lens for almost 6 years and it is my best friend! It lived in Germany with me for 3.5 years as I traveled all over Europe and even into the sandy environment of Egypt. This lens is a great walkabout lens that can do almost everything, in my opinion.
Pros:
- Consistent Output
- Durable
- Rugged
- Strong Construction

I have spoons that are sharper...
Firstly, let me tell you that I'm a Canon nut. I can't get enough of the stuff and embarrassingly, I've even been known to trawl a popular online auction site to buy apparel that's adorned with the Canon insignia, in that oh so recognisable font. However, I'm not on their payroll.

Great walking-around lens. Fits a great range with great image quality.
This is an ideal gap lens for folks looking for fast glass and really good optical quality. I got this lens to replace my 18-55 and 18-200 lenses. The glas on this is better than both of those and I find this is more versatile for a walking around lens.

Great Lens
I just bought this lens and tried it over a 2 day period, shooting scenery and macro shots at the Botanic Garden. The greatest thing about this lens is you don't need to change lenses for different shots. I took wide angle shots, flower shots, macro shots of bees.
Pros:
- Focuses very close
- Very close focusing
- Fast / accurate auto-focus
Cons:
- Poor in Low Light

Great walking around lens for crop-sensor bodies
I've owned this lens for 10 years, having purchased it shortly after buying my 20D back in 2005. The lens has always performed perfectly for me - never a hiccup of any sort. To be fair, the lens does not produce "L-series" quality, but then, it's not an "L-series" lens.

Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM
I bought this lens when I upgraded from 50D to a 7D mark ii. The ability of the 7D mark ii to store in camera lens correction profiles is a game changer for lenses like this. It may not be a perfect lens, no lens is, but now you have the ability to fix it in camera without having to play around in...
Pros:
- Really great zoom range
- Good image stabilization
Cons:
- Not as good as my 17-40
- but hey what do you want for the price
