The first step up Canon's ladder of standard zoom lenses, at least from the kit lens supplied with the 550D and 600D, is the EF-S 17-85mm. It's better built, with a much sturdier feel than the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS kit lens for those cameras.

Great walking-around lens. Fits a great range with great image quality.
This is an ideal gap lens for folks looking for fast glass and really good optical quality. I got this lens to replace my 18-55 and 18-200 lenses. The glas on this is better than both of those and I find this is more versatile for a walking around lens.

Good for ametuers and semi pros
I would like to recommend this lens who are trying to upgrade from their kit lens. Other than a bit of chromatic aberration at the edges of leaves when zoomed. This lens rocks. I bought this lens when i bought my camera body. Till then this lens was my great companion.

Not the best build quality
I encountered a problem which I later found was a very common one for this lens - the zoom gets stuck. This is due to a tiny screw that comes loose deep in the heart of it. There is an excellent YouTube video setting out how to take it apart (removing about 22 screws!) and fix it.
Pros:
- Lightweight
Cons:
- Lens Creep

I do like this lens but when my camera started to show an error message with only this lens, I took it to a repair shop. They had to replace a part and said it was a common problem for this lens ...and it cost me approx $200 for the out of warrantee timeframe repair.

Recently unleashed, the Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 USM IS is one of the more interesting consumer standard zoom lenses in the market. It is often considered as an upgrade path from the basic EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 kit zoom.

Great Lens
I just bought this lens and tried it over a 2 day period, shooting scenery and macro shots at the Botanic Garden. The greatest thing about this lens is you don't need to change lenses for different shots. I took wide angle shots, flower shots, macro shots of bees.
Pros:
- Focuses very close
- Very close focusing
- Fast / accurate auto-focus
Cons:
- Poor in Low Light

Good all round/walk around lens
I have had this lens for around 4 years now & have taken at least 8,000 photos with it. Compact, fairly light weight, & easy to use makes it an ideal walk around lens for shooting close to medium range subjects.
Pros:
- Easy to use
- Compact

good kit lens
There seems to be a lot of quality control issues with this lens. The main problen i have with this lens is "zoom creep". Its also hard to focus manually. Other than that, the lens is good. I traded the kit lens that came with the camera for this lens, and i'm glad i did.
Pros:
- good lens if you dodge a lemon
Cons:
- Poor build quality
- zoom creep

Great lens but for issues with build quality
This lens is somewhat of a mixed bag. Optically, it's a great step up from the kit lens, and a reasonable compromise on price vs. performance. The image stabilisation is great, if not quite as great as the marketing material might suggest.
