Don't judge a lens by its cover

As I read in other reviews, this lens isn't much to look at but the end result speaks for itself. Works good in low light but focus gets slower the darker it gets and is a bit on the noisy side.
Pros:
  • Consistent Output
  • Lightweight
Cons:
  • Poor in Low Light

Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Kamera Lens Review

This is the lightest cheapest-feeling lens I've ever used on an SLR. It is all plastic, right down to the lens mount. The optical performance of the glass inside is fine, but manual focusing isn't much fun.

Amazing lens

This is really a great lens, shoots great pics in low light without using the flash, and gives pictures a strong depth of field, compared to a kit lens. Really makes the subject stand out. Amazing value and a must have for any photographer.

I would call it Canon's secret weapon, it's cheap and it's very good optically. You could use it as a short portrait lense on Digital SLR due to it's large aperture and 1,6x50 focal length.

This is my go-to portrait lens for indoors and outdoors. It's never let me down, it's fast enough to get REALLY creamy Bokeh and quick auto focus. If you're looking for a great prime lens to get started with something better than your kit lens, this is your lens!
Pros:
  • Fast Glass
  • Inexpensive
  • great Depth of field
  • quick AF
Cons:
  • It feels a bit cheaply built, it's plastic housing doesn't scream quality
  • Also the lens hood, (ES-62), isn't included, so that's an additional $8-$15

Very Good For Amatures

Bought this lens with a 50D body instead of going for the 50D lens Kit.

Dissapointed

I purchased this lens based on reviews and value for money. Its very cheap for a 1.8 lens, so it was worth a try. I did however return it. I could have lived with the very lightweight plastic construction, but I found the picture to be very soft at apertures larger than f2.8.
Pros:
  • Price
Cons:
  • Very soft pictures at larger apertures

50 mm lens has been the standard camera lens and is the optical benchmark by which manufacturers are judged and compared. Although, the basic lens focus has now shifted (at least at the low to mid amateur level) to zooms, you can still benefit from years of research and development that went into...
Pros:
  • Affordable price
  • light weighted and competitive performance
Cons:
  • Slightly degradable build quality
