Canon EF 50mm f/1.8
With a f/1.8 it is great in low light situations. This would be a great lens for anyone wanting to get into photography on a budget and looking to take some great pictures and learn on. Don't forget to order a UV filter.- Ok for it's low price, this is a great lens
- Takes good clear pictures up close and just snapshots around the house
- Works good for still life photos and portraits
- None that I can see so far
- and I am putting it through the paces here
I wish I had just bought the 1.4
My 85mm is the main lens I use, and it is amazing in low light situations. This 50mm doesn't even compare. I should have just spent the extra money for the 1.4. On the positive side, it is very light weight.
Good Inexpensive Lens
Brought this lens with my T3i almost 2 yrs ago and have used it many times. I've since upgraded to the 70d and it's still going strong. For the price it can't be beat. Yeah it's plastic, but the optics are great and it takes really good, clean pictures.- Super-sharp images
- Poor build quality
Awesome portrait lens for beginners
I checked this lens out after an online tutorial recommended it. What a great value! A no-brainer for beginners and hobbyists. This lens takes sharp portraits. If you're a pro, you might want something fancier, but for the rest of us it's totally worth the price.- Affordable
- sharp photos
- nice bokeh
- Might feel cheap to a pro
A revelation
Having used a 18-200mm kit lens I was unprepared for the difference that F1.8 makes. Amazing value for money and an ideal "first lens" to buy after having a kit lens.- Easy to use
- Compact
- Build quality
Great lens at a great price!
If youre considering buying this lens, just buy it! You wont regret it, its great for portraits and has amazing low light capabilities, also great optics :)
Great lens for the price.
This lens obviously isn't going to have the build quality of a l lens. However, the clarity from this lens is outstanding! The af seems to hunt sometimes but wide open, it is better to use manual focus because the dof is so shallow.- This lens obviously isn't going to have the build quality of a l lens

Great value!
I debated about purchasing this lens becuase of the plastic build quality, but I have been amazed at the sharpness and quality of the pictures - particularly for portraits. The super fast F1.8 lets you get that nice, short depth of field & bokeh, without spending $$$$.- tack sharp
- quick focus
- small & light
- a bit loud
- too much plastic
Good Cheap Lens
This lens should be in every photographers bag, whether serious or hobbyist. Great lens and for the price, you cannot beat it. One thing tho is the build is very "Plastic Like" but for the price you should not expect it to be built like an L lens.- Consistent Output
- Easily Interchangeable
- Fast / accurate auto-focus
- Weak Casing
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
A great lens to start with. Sharpness and colors are excellent. My lens is sharp at the center even at 1.8 if you can nail the focus, although it does have some dreamy effect. With an APS-C -if you have a full frame you will probably be able to afford the 1.4- the equivalent focal lenght is around...- Sharp
- cheap
- lightweight
- Plasticky
- sometimes misses focusing at 1.8
- rounded shaped bokeh highlights only at 1.8
