I wish I had just bought the 1.4
My 85mm is the main lens I use, and it is amazing in low light situations. This 50mm doesn't even compare. I should have just spent the extra money for the 1.4. On the positive side, it is very light weight.
Great lens for the price.
This lens obviously isn't going to have the build quality of a l lens. However, the clarity from this lens is outstanding! The af seems to hunt sometimes but wide open, it is better to use manual focus because the dof is so shallow.- This lens obviously isn't going to have the build quality of a l lens

Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II (Full Format) - Review / Test Report
At just 130g it is an ultra light-weight lens and with a size of 68x41mm it's also extremely compact. The build quality is sufficient to use a positive phrase. The lens barrel is made of plastic down to the mount. All-in-all you feel the price tag here.
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens Review
Gary Wolstenholme reviews the compact and basic Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens.- Excellent optical quality
- Light weight
- Compact
- Inexpensive
- Build quality
- 52mm
The pictures below illustrate the angles of view on 35mm full frame and APS-C camera bodies:
- Excellent image quality when stopped down
- Essentially no lateral chromatic aberration
- Extremely cheap
- Extremely cheaply built
- Harsh and distracting bokeh due to pentagonal aperture
- Vignetting at wide apertures on full frame (which only disappears at F3.5
- Inconsistent autofocus in low light (most problematic when using large apertures
Very Good For Amatures
Bought this lens with a 50D body instead of going for the 50D lens Kit.
Adverage lens
I bought this lens specifically for macro photography. I have been using this lens for a month now on my Canon T 3i. I find this lens to have a very cheap feel to it and I don't think it would take much abuse. Thats ok because with the low cost of the lens it could easily be replaced.- Consistent Output
- Easily Interchangeable
- Inexpensive
- Lightweight
- Poor construction
- Slow AF
- Slow Focus
Cheap as chips but still flashy
Anyone who has an interest in photography using SLR's and particularly Canon bodies should take a look at this prime 50mm lens. Extremely inexpensive for what it is, it delivers sharp images and does exactly what it says on the tin.- Cheap
- lightweight
- sharp pictures
- Noisy motor
- lack of zoom
Good compromise
This is a reasonable compromise beween a big aperture and big money. The autofocus is a bit slow and hard to get use to, but when it's right it's really right. At the right price, it's a good value lens.
Remarkable Clarity for the $
Use for natural light indoor and outdoor portraits- Crystal Clear
- Easily Interchangeable
- Excellent Dof Control
- Nice Bokeh
- Outstanding value
- Seems to be fragile
