Call Of Duty: WWII review – back to its roots

This year's COD goes back to the Second World War for the first time in nearly a decade, with a return to boots on the ground action.

Fantastic graphics and presentation; Headquarters is an impressive social hub and the less traditional elements of the campaign work well; War mode is great fun

The campaign is too clichéd in terms of both characters and overfamiliar set pieces; Multiplayer gameplay has no real new ideas and gets old quickly; Too few maps for War

Rallying The Shooter On Multiple Fronts

Every year, Call of Duty presents a multifaceted package catering to every possible playstyle. That wealth of content continues with Call of Duty: WWII, which features a historically-focused campaign, a zombie mode designed to puzzle and scare, and classic multiplayer combat rooted in class-based...

"The eyes of the world are upon you" – Call of Duty WWII Review

With a campaign that brings some of the most historical battles of the European Theater to life like never before, multiplayer that combines the best of the old and the new, and one of the most visceral Zombies games the series has had, Call of Duty WWII is a triumphant return to its roots,...

World War II setting is a natural fit for the franchise; Health pack system in the campaign encourages more deliberate gameplay style; Multiplayer is the best it's been in years; Objective-based assault/defend multiplayer mode War is a standout for the series

Lead protagonist in campaign is a bit of a cliche; Would be nice to see more of the campaign's game mechanics show up in multiplayer

Call of Duty: WWII Review

It's that time of the year where videogame companies release their "best-selling" games for the Holiday period in a bid to claim sales glory over the year. And it just wouldn't be the same without Call of Duty's annual entry.

Call of Duty: WWII Review

With the intro sequence hitting the beaches of Normandy, the cut-scene seamlessly transitions into gameplay and you're suddenly there, on D-Day, 6th June 1944. The bombardment of bullets, bodies eve

Mature portrayal of WWII; Boots on the ground combat; Stripped-down; back-to-basics COD

QTEs are outdated

Call of Duty WW2 Review – War Has Changed Back

Since Black Ops 2 the Call of Duty series has been reaching for a near-future sci-fi feel, culminating in last year's Infinite Warfare where humanity had conquered space travel and fought on the planets, moons, and asteroids of the Sol System.

Revitalized and streamlined multiplayer; Much improved Zombies mode; New features and gametypes are great

Some features are still not available; Campaign is well produced; but uninspired

Call of Duty WWII Review – The King Is Back

It's been a big year for nostalgia. Crash Bandicoot played on the fond memories of gamers and had a banner year, selling better than anyone could have expected. Even Super Mario Odyssey harkens back to a simpler time in gaming and encapsulates that simple fun many remember from their childhood.

Best Campaign In A Long Time; HQ Social Space is The Real Deal; Best Feeling Shooter On The Market; So Much Bang For Back

In-engine Lip-syncing Is Bad; Servers And Lag Are Still Causing Grief

Call of Duty: WWII

The Call of Duty (COD) franchise has always excelled in some areas and fallen short in others. The latter more notably has been the quality and believability of storytelling, with each recent iteration of the game trying to push the envelope as far as warfare goes, and adopt a more futuristic tone.

Superb attention to detail; A more engaging storyline; Sharp gameplay

Slightly short campaign; Unexpected deaths; Plane mechanics finicky

Call of Duty: WWII review

Toby Berger is conscripted for CoD: WWII, the series' long-awaited return to its roots, from Advanced Warfare's Sledgehammer Games.

Some good moments in the single-player campaign; Multiplayer remains excellent; War is a welcome addition, as is divisions; Sound design is fantastic; Nazi Zombies is brilliant

Besides those few good moments, the single-player campaign is subpar; Map design encourages camping; Post-match issues derail a usually smooth and snappy multiplayer experience

(PlayStation 4 Review) Call of Duty: WWII

Call of Duty: WWII is a conservative entry that offers a fun if familiar campaign that sees players returning to the battlefields of Europe, along with a multiplayer component that isn't quite ready for prime time.
