The key to making the very best espresso is to grind fresh beans just before you brew your coffee. To minimise the time between grinding and extraction, the BES870 has an in-built conical burr grinder, so you can grind directly into the portafilter. You can adjust the grind size and dose until it meets your preferred taste.

Good little machine. You need to be super fiddly with the inbuilt grinder to get the right amount, as it tends to pile up and just go everywhere when set to defaults. I now meausre my beans and only put that amount in the grinder. When using the frother I recommend spraying just into the waste tray for about 10 seconds, otherwise your milk jar will be full of water, not steam. The colour seems be super easy to scratch off, so fingers crossed it doesn't fade too fast...
This is the fourth generation of Breville Espresso maker we have owned as every one has proven to make excellent coffee. This is by far and away the best one, as we still love the more manual operation and experimenting with different beans and grinds. Our old models are still working, we have just been upgrading every five years or so as the parts are relatively interchangeable which we find super handy when shower head seals etc. need replacing. Nicely done.
