Bound by Flame Review

Bound By Flame offers everything we have come to expect from western RPGs – skill trees, customisable equipment, fast-paced combat – and beards. The world is overrun by skeletons (dead walkers), and it's your job (who else is gonna do it?) to save the world. That is, if you want to.

A solid RPG experience offering everything you'd expect - but not enough surprises. Many enjoyable features but feels like playing part one of a two parter.

Bound by Flame

Dialogue is poorly written, and everything that happens in Bound by Flame's opening hours seems off somehow. The tone of this apocalyptic world is deeply unpleasant, the lines are cliché, the events just plain silly.

Bound by Flame

I generally hate it when people reduce a work in any medium down to what it bears the most obvious similarities to. It strikes me as doing a disservice to the work, and more to the point, as being critically lazy.

Down in flames.

When you first start playing Bound by Flame, you're asked to enter a name for your character--a name that is then summarily ignored by the game's supporting cast, which always refers to your hero by his or her known name: Vulcan.
Pros:
  • Sharing your body with a demon leads to some interesting narrative choices
  • Simple but robust crafting system
  • A good sense of weight gives battle some initial appeal
Cons:
  • Dry writing and voice acting fail to bring the characters to life
  • Weird story and presentation problems make it hard to take anything seriously
  • Disastrous combat scenarios made even worse by useless companions
  • Dull
  • narrow corridors do a poor job of building a fantasy world

A Tale Of Fire And Beards

Bound By Flame has been keeping suck a low profile that even as I write this I find it a bit surreal that I'm playing it after it being on my radar for so long. But after such a long time, I can confidently say that it was worth the wait.

Bound by Flame – ambitious RPG, brutal combat, and painful voicework

I have a deep appreciation for both steep difficulty and action RPGs. I've dabbled in Dark Souls, I've made a mess in Super Meat Boy, and I've nearly lost my mind in Ninja Gaiden.
Pros:
  • Choices truly matter
  • Companions are fleshed out
  • Upgrade trees provides replayability
  • Crafting makes each play unique
Cons:
  • Combat is beyond unbalanced and brutal
  • Difficulty levels are too hard or too easy
  • The voice work for Vulcan is atrocious
  • Scripted swearing is way out of place
