Beyond: Two Souls Review

Scene by scene, is compelling enough, principally thanks to a remarkable performance from Ellen Page. But never before have I felt like such a passive participant in a video game, my choices and actions merely icing on a dense, multi-layered cake.

Terrific performance from Page; Beautiful world

Choices feel inconsequential; Unfocused plot; Poor combat mechanics

Break That Rusty Cage | Beyond: Two Souls Review

Upon finishing Beyond: Two Souls for the first time, or perhaps during various points in its haphazard scatter-shot narrative, you'd be forgiven for thinking Quantic Dream's Lead Designer David Cage has lost his mind.

Unbelievable graphics; Very Emotive Animation

Jarring Narrative; Bad Controls

Beyond: Two Souls

"Ultimately your story as Jodie is one of a search for happiness..." "...this game leans much too heavily on suspension of disbelief." "...one of the most amazing aspects of Beyond: the way it seamlessly edits together its narrative modules."

The stunning amount of choices in the game; The emotion Ellen Page brings to Jodie; The game drips with innovation

Chemistry between the characters is minimal; Jodie's gameplay isn't rewarding; The writing and plot design sometimes feels weak

Beyond: Two Souls review: an interactive experience you won't want to miss

Beyond is also about player choice, and though you physically follow a linear path throughout the game, only deviating with Aiden to search for bonus unlockables, you'll be faced with a variety of decisions, some of which just affect the dialogue at that particular time and others that have a bigger...

Visually it's in a different league to many games on PS3; Stunning facial animation and locations, Great characters, great plot, excellent twists and a fitting conclusion, The action sequences are superb and switching between Jodie and Aiden delivers a unique mechanic

Some interactions are over excessive and gameplay plods along on occasions; The action sequences are so good; we would have liked to have seen more

Beyond: Two Souls

What do you get when you have media with no tension, no drama and one of the cutest actresses in Hollywood? Well you either get X-Men: The Last Stand or Beyond: Two Souls. The crappiness of The Last Stand is well documented so we're going to be picking on Beyond: Two Souls now since at least that...

Voice acting is pretty good

Not a video game; not a movie; nothing of value

Beyond: Two Souls Review

Beyond is a blending of film and video games, but for the most part contains some of the worst parts of both media. From Hollywood you get the self-important, muddled plot and from games you get a 10-hour long quick time event (QTE).

Looks beautiful; Jodie

Little to no gameplay; Storyline needs to be trimmed a bit; Aiden is underdeveloped

Beyond: Two Souls

With this generation of consoles mere weeks away from being replaced, it's surprising for a game like

+ Fantastic acting by Page; + Beautiful story; + Facial capture animation was spectacular; + Fighting with Aiden is a ton of fun; + One of the most ambitious games of this console generation

- Awkward flashback/forward storytelling; - Graphics aside from faces look dated and bland; - Choices feel inconsequential; - Terrible camera angles; - Obnoxious controls; - Tense moments: why run when you can slowly walk away from danger

Beyond: Two Souls PlayStation 3 Review

Those not familiar with the concept may find the experience lacking in more common gameplay elements, but those familiar with Quantic Dreams previous title Heavy Rain will no what to expect.

Gripping original story; Famous faces and voices really add to the cinematic experience; Incredible graphics; Smooth animation and motion capture

Some may not enjoy the less involving gameplay / controls

Review: Beyond: Two Souls (PS3)

Four years after QuanticDream's frantic "Press X For Jason" simulator, the company goes all blockbuster with Beyond: Two Souls. The most notable aspect of which is, of course, the inclusion of Hollywood stars Ellen Page and Willem Dafoe likeness, voice and all.

Yep; That's definitely Ellen Page and Willem Dafoe; Some gripping storytelling; but timeline jumping is not for all; Accessible to non-gamers so get the family into this

Fumbling in confusion when you can't tell what you're supposed to do next
