Apple Watch Series 4 40mm Aluminium Case

Rating 4.5 72 reviews

According to Apple, the Series 4 represents "a fundamental redesign and re-engineering of Apple Watch." As a result, watch out for a lot of very cool changes, from the curved corners to the all-new and larger display.

A MUCH bigger display

The Series 4 provides lots to talk about but it's the display that is capturing the most attention. The narrow borders deliver a viewing area that’s over 30 per cent larger! The curved corners match the radius of the case, allowing for images and the touch surface to almost extend to the very edge of the screen.

Bigger display means new interface

Because of the bigger display, the design of the interface has been remodelled with the new Infograph watch face now capable of handling eight complications, allowing you to do more and see more at a glance.

Never skip a beat

The optical heart sensor has always been a feature of the Apple Watch, but in the Series 4 it can now detect if your heart rate falls below a specified threshold for a period of 10 minutes, and activates a low-heart-rate notification as a result.

More than just a processor

The Series 4 is a complete SiP a System in Package. This means the entire system is fabricated onto a single component with some incredible capabilities crammed into that small device.

It sounds better

The Apple Watch Series 4 boasts improvements in virtually every sense, and that includes a speaker that's 50 % louder for enhanced audio quality for things like Siri and the Walkie-Talkie function. Meanwhile, the microphone is now on the other side of the watch to minimise echo when making phone calls.

A newer model Apple Watch Series 5 40mm Aluminium was released in September 2019.

Apple Watch Series 4

I am of two minds on the Apple Watch. On one hand, I think that it's the best overall smartwatch you can currently buy. And to that end, the Series 4 -- now available starting at $399 -- is the best Apple Watch to date.
Pros:
  • The Apple Watch Series 4 offers a larger, crisp display that shows more with less bezel, superfast speed and a louder speaker
  • It adds high and low heart-rate detection, fall detection with SOS trigger, and (eventually) FDA-cleared EKG for more detailed heart readings
Cons:
  • Starting prices are higher than last year
  • Battery life still won't last past two days
  • Watch face options are still very limited in choice and function
  • Only works with iPhones

Apple Watch Series 4 Aluminum (40mm, Silver) - Excellent review

If one were to pull out a feature comparison of the Apple Watch Series 4 versus the Series 3, specific to sports and fitness, they’d likely just go ‘shrug’. Ultimately, the differences just aren’t there in the hardware side of things.

Apple Watch Series 4 44mm review: It's almost the one you've been waiting for

Ultimately, the Apple Watch Series 4 is an awesome device that you're going to love. I just think you're going to want next year's model more if it has an ambient display. I'd recommend doing what I did with the original Apple Watch.

Apple Watch Series 4 Aluminum (40mm, Silver) - Excellent review

It’s bigger, it’s better-looking and it could save your life
Pros:
  • The larger screen (30% larger no less), especially as the Watch itself has barely grown at all. The Series 4 comes in 40mm and 44mm versions (measured vertically), compared to 38mm and 42mm for past Watches.
Cons:
  • There’s no native sleep tracking, and even if there was the battery life is still too short to allow you to wear the Watch at night. The battery will last a day comfortably, but not two, so you have to plug it in every night.

Watch Series 4: What price 'freedom' About as much as you'd expect from an Apple product

One non-obvious point arises from using a range of wearables and it isn't mentioned often enough. While the iPhone may not be the best phone (let's park that argument), the combination of iPhone and Watch trumps any other combination.

Apple Watch Series 4 Aluminum (40mm, Silver) - Excellent review

W hen the Apple Watch debuted four years ago , there was quite a bit of skepticism from the traditional watch industry, media, and enthusiasts alike. Personally, as many aBlogtoWatch readers know, I was enthusiastic about it from day one and continue to be so to this day.

Apple Watch Series 4 review: Stay Gold

The usual caveats apply, but the new Apple Watch is still far and away the best smartwatch experience out there. For pretty much as long as smartwatches have been a thing, the Apple Watch has been treated by many as the gold standard.
Pros:
  • Incredibly smooth software experience
  • Great look and feel
Cons:
  • You have to own an iPhone
  • No ECG in Australia
