Alan Wake review

First announced in 2005, Alan Wake is a psychological thriller five years in the making. We had our reservations, but Remedy's narrative-heavy foray has proved worth the wait.
Pros:
  • A beautifully crafted world, stunningly presented
  • A cast of believable characters wrapped up in a narrative that's paced as reliably as a metronome
  • A fine balance of suspense and action
Cons:
  • Some disappointing set pieces
  • Wake's flamboyant literary agent, Barry, occasionally goes to great lengths to remind you that he's a caricature sidekick

Alan Wake is an art game for men. Unlike Flower or Braid this game features amazing cinematics, menacing Darkness monsters (à la the Heartless and Nobodies in Kingdom Hearts) and without a doubt the best storyline for a game I have played this year.

Alan Wake Review

For over six years, Remedy has been tinkering away at Alan Wake , the Finnish developers' follow-up to Max Payne 2 , resurfacing intermittently at different E3s over the years. For such a lengthy development period and ambitious subject matter, is Alan Wake worth the wait? Undoubtedly.
Pros:
  • Fantastic atmosphere created with aesthetics and sound
  • Running away is just as satisfying as fighting
  • Intriguing characters
  • story and location
Cons:
  • Wake can control clumsily at points
  • Some pointless achievement based collecting
  • Some major plot moments lack a strong payoff

Alan Wake Review

After five years, can it be said that Alan Wake was worth the wait? Yes, it can, but Alan Wake is far from a perfect game. It does a fantastic job of bridging the gap between games and film, with a story that is executed so perfectly, with plenty of twists and turns and edge-of-your-seat moments.

Explaining What the Hell Alan Wake Is

There's a moment in Alan Wake , where the titular protagonist reads a passage that goes, "The new one will be a masterpiece, I know it! You must tell him not to listen to the trolls in the forums saying 'Departure' will never get finished. He should take his time and make it perfect. I can wait.
Pros:
  • great stories and hybrid shooters
Cons:
  • the dark

Alan Wake

You can approach this axe-wielding, boogeyman-dodging thriller in two ways: as a literate, sophisticated mystery told in the form of a videogame, or as a frantic, pulse-pounding actioner about rationing ammo and light sources.
Pros:
  • + Sophisticated narrative pairs well with cinematic gameplay, + White-knuckle atmosphere
  • polished combat controls
Cons:
  • - Gameplay variety peaks after a while
  • pretty linear, ? Wait, wait, wait..

Alan Wake

The excellent combat builds on the fantastic storytelling, ensuring there is never a dull moment during this roughly 12-hour adventure. Alan Wake has a handy way of dealing with dark-fueled creatures: shine a flashlight on them.
Pros:
  • Fresh storytelling fleshes out the supernatural events in interesting ways
  • Satisfying combat mechanic makes disposing of evil creatures a blast
  • Subtle lighting effects and a moody soundtrack create a disturbing atmosphere
  • Optional collectibles are well worth risking your life to grab
Cons:
  • Lacks surprising
  • memorable gameplay moments

Alan Wake

Five years in the making is a very long time for any game and is rarely a good omen. Within half an hour it's obvious where the five years went. The world of Alan Wake, the town of Bright Falls is incredibly detailed. It's hard to convey just how much has gone in to it.
