Synology DiskStation DS713+ and DX513

Today we are checking out the Synology DiskStation DS713+ as well as the optional DX513 expansion unit. The DS713+ is powered by an Intel Atom D2700 dual-core processor and features a 1GB memory buffer while the DX513 expands storage from 2-bays to a more impressive 7-bays.

A simple expansion for an easy to use NAS

I have a DX513 attached to a DS1812+, filled with Seagate barracuda, Desktop, and NAS drives as well as some WD Reds. I have the two set to 2 disk redundancy, and have a total of 32 TB Usable space using 12 disks between the two (8+4). It works. Theres nothing more to say about it.

Simple Plug and Play design works well not really much more to say about it

Havent encountered any issues in 2+ years of heavy use

I have been using Synology equipment since 2014. I have gone through many bugs, deficiencies, enhancements and software updates during that time. As with any hardware platform driven by software there is inevitably these kind of challenges but what I didn't expect was to be forced to throw away...

A great (doubling) addition to our great 1511+

Bought this with the idea to expand a volume that had been filled up quicker than I wanted. Dropped in a WD 4 TB Red pro disk and Extended the volume in just under 18 hours. With still 4 slots available, we have plenty of possibilities left.

Price performance ratio; expand with minimal effort and still space to spare

The communication with the courier was detrimental in that a load of emails came through with were contradiction each other about delivery date etc

Great - Except for DOA e-Sata cable

Painless installation - after a couple of hours spent trying to determine why the unit wouldnt power up automatically with the 1815+ as it is supposed to. Seems Synology sent out a bunch of bad e-Sata cables (search on-line for power-up issues). Once the cable was replaced, worked as advertised.
