A Great Lens For What It Is!

I've read many reviews about this lens, and now that I've used it I believe that if your expectations are realistic you can truly love it and what it can do. This is a Prime lens, very sharp, with decent focusing speed in good light, and light enough to hand-hold!

Relatively light weight for a Prime Telephoto lens; takes teleconverters; great sharpness and clarity

Rear of lens is "open" so be careful of dust/dirt when changing lenses

Amazingly Sharp

I bought this lens because of its reputation for incredible sharpness and close-focusing ability. My primary use since purchasing this lens in April of 2008 has been close-up photography of dragonflies. I use it in combination with the Nikon 1.4x TC on a D200.

Durable; Easily Interchangeable; Quick Focus; Rugged; Sharp Focus; Strong Construction

No VR; Suspect tripod collar

Nikon 300mm f/4D ED-IF AF-S Nikkor review by vantje

This is a great lens, a really great lens. Sharpness is excellent from f4 and only gets marginally better at f5.6 to f8. No Chromatic Aberration or Color fringing. No distortion obeserved. AF is fast, but not like newer generations AFS.

very sharp wide-open

Flimsy tripodfoot

Great For Birds & Other Wildlife

I've taken some stunning photos of birds with this lens. It would be great if the lens had a larger aperture, but then the price would shoot up. Make sure you have a good, solid tripod.

Easily Interchangeable; Rugged; Sharp Focus; Strong Construction

Primarily purchased as a ‘with minimum compromise' telephoto lens for wildlife photography, after years of being ultimately disappointed by the performance of 70-300 f.4-5.6-type lenses when compared to my prime wide-angle and medium-range telephoto lenses.

Pretty much everything; see above

Pretty much nothing; see above

Very good value for money, crisp sharp focus and clear imaging!

I bought this product as I couldn't afford the f2.8 version and wanted something that would give me an extended range for photographing wildlife with crisp optics and very sharp focusing. I had read reviews of this lens online and it had been described very favourably.

So far so good

I've had this lens for less than a month so it's hard to identify the pros and cons especially since it's winter here and we haven't had very good light. However, I've used it a few times and am happy with the results.
