Rarely do I look at a standalone scanner, but should you need to scan other than documents then a specialised standalone scanner comes to the fore especially for negatives and slides.

A scanner for me is not really as important except if you want to upload a document faster. The only thing I know before that needs to be scan are merely documents. But right now, even pictures can be scanned.
My name is Art Schwartz and this my first MyMac.com review. I'm a Mac convert, a wannabe photographer, and a recovering academic. By "recovering academic" I mean I: (a) spent the greater part of my career pontificating to disinterested undergraduate students; and (b) am really trying recover my...
The HP Scanjet is really a 1,2,3 operation. All I wanted was a piece of equipment that I could easily set up and produce out of sight scanned images. The HP Scanjet delivered it big time. I can even scan transparencies and 35 mm slides. The HP software is in my opinion one of the best on the market.
Is not compatible with Vista - lots of forums and blogs with frustrated G4010 Vista users. I took mine back today. HP support not helpful.
This unit is good and serviceable at the cost. I've been using it for 10 months, from 10 to 30 scans a day, 2 to 3 days a week. It is thus far trouble free. Set-up is easy, a simple USB connection. No compatibility problems with my graphic or word processing programs.
Software impossible to use with Vista. Would scan docs and send to printer OK but never able to set up a "my scanned docs" file to send copies of scanned docs or photos. Worked 2 hrs with HP service and 1 hr with seller to no avail. HP took logfile but then took 4 days to get back to me.
Prompt and courteous service; but failed to fix problem
Unable to get software to function properly ; Would not store docs.
Finally! A scanner that does what it says it will do. It scans 5 slides at a time (not 2, not 4, but 5!) and does is quickly. It also scans negatives, documents, and photos. I was able to hook it up to my older Dell Notebook and it was scanning away in minutes. This is a great scanner for the price.
Accurate Color; Easy Setup; Excellent Software; Good Bit Depth; Good Resolution; Widely Compatible; Works on Network
The G4010 works well in default mode. Using higher DPI or editing while scanning makes copying very slow. I mean like 6 minutes per scan. Only buy if you dont need editing before saving pictures.
I bought this product with high hopes, but it's seriously damaged my faith in HP's imaging products.
Inexpensive; acceptable scan quality and speed on paper objects
Insufficient image quality for scanning negatives; awful software; unreliable
