About this time last year, I was putting the finishing touches on last year's iteration of EA Sports' soccer IP. I spent over a week playing through every game mode, trying to see what worked and what needed fine tuning.

Like the best professionals, FIFA 16 responds to an unexpected challenge with disciplined play driven by the knowledge of what it takes to win. Having slammed the door on its competition for much of the preceding console generation, EA Sports' FIFA was blindsided last year by the soccer video game...

Note: On the eve of this review being written, EA Sports released an update for the game that fixes some bugs, improves stability in some game modes and adds transfers and some licenses.

Football game reviews can be odd things. You never really know where the reviewer is coming from and how what they want might differ from what you want. Sometimes the job is given to whoever least hates sports games and sometimes it's given to a supposed ‘resident expert'.

It certainly doesn't reinvent the wheel, but FIFA 16 does enough to compete for the championship once again. Changes to defensive awareness and structures make the game more punishing, although they can also lead to a slower, duller football experience.
