Canon EOS 6D review

Full-frame DSLRs used to be priced for and targeted at professional photographers. However, such guidelines no longer strictly apply. Like Nikon's D600, the Canon EOS 6D is an ‘affordable' full-frame DSLR aimed squarely at the enthusiast, but which may also find popularity with professionals who...

Canon EOS 6D

Prior to the announcement of the Canon EOS 6D ($2,099 direct, body only) and the Nikon D600 , shooters who wanted a full-frame camera -one with an image sensor the same size as a 35mm film frame-were faced with a small number of choices at $3,000 and up.

Compact; Inexpensive for its class; Full-frame sensor; 4.5fps shooting; Superb image quality at high ISOs; Interchangeable focus screens; Integrated GPS and Wi-Fi; 1080p30 video capture; Battery grip available; Supported USB tethered and Wi-Fi remote control

Not the fastest camera on the block; Viewfinder only offers 97 percent coverage; Not compatible with EF-S lenses; GPS saps battery life; No flash; Slow focus during video recording; No PC Sync socket

Canon EOS 6D Review

Prior to the announcement of the Canon EOS 6D ($2,099 direct, body only)($1,599.00 at Amazon) and the Nikon D600, shooters who wanted a full-frame camera—one with an image sensor the same size as a 35mm film frame—were faced with a small number of choices at $3,000 and up. Both companies cut about $1,000 off the price of entry to full-frame with new models that sacrifice some features that pro shooters are used to, but are packaged in smaller bodies that are similar in design to the top-end APS-C cameras. The 20-megapixel 6D also adds some enthusiast-friendly features—notably an integrated GPS receiver and Wi-Fi capability—which, along with fantastic image quality, earn it an almost-perfect rating and our Editors' Choice award. The $6,000 full-frame Nikon D4($4,499.95 at Amazon) is still a better choice for anyone who relies on photography to put food on the table, but most folks simply don't need that much camera in their bag. Design and Features While it's bigger than entry-lev...

Canon EOS 6D review

Full-frame photography has got a lot more interesting in the last 12 months, especially for people whose next camera isn't a business expense. The Canon EOS 5D Mark III , Nikon D800 and Sony Alpha A99 all helped to redefine what an entry-level full-frame SLR was capable of.

Released at the same time as Nikon's D600, the 6D is extremely similar in price, features and handling. The 20.2MP sensor produces stunning image quality, and the high-res 3in screen and better ISO response both outperform its Nikon counterpart.

This makes the Canon EOS 6D a more versatile, customisable option than the Canon EOS 60D for sports photographers – although the maximum continuous shooting rate is only 4.5fps. There's an interesting option in the Playback menu that enables you to create a photobook direct from the camera.

Canon EOS 6D

In some respects, it's hard to tell who Canon's targeting with the EOS 6D, its "budget" full-frame camera. It's got some fairly consumer-y features and specifications. GPS? Check. Built-in Wi-Fi? Check. Single SD card slot? Check. Viewfinder with less than 100 percent coverage? Check.

The Canon EOS 6D delivers the photo and video quality you expect from a full-frame sensor; in a well-designed and relatively lightweight body

While the camera has nice extra features; like Wi-Fi and GPS support; it's missing some basics for the price like on-camera flash; multiple card slots; and a 100 percent-coverage viewfinder
