Every now and then, it is time for a new "kit" lens in the Canon lens lineup. Normally this is nothing to get overly excited about since most of the "upgrades" are just on the cosmetical side.

I purchased this lens to go with my Canon T4i as I wanted the best possible video performance and the flexibility of zoom lens. I had considered the 40mm STM lens but for the $ difference this lens is a much better value.

Looks cheap

This is a typical Canon lens, bundled with many of their DSLR cameras. It provides variation without spending a lot of money, and the quality of photos is excellent.

Can do close up photos, as well as wide angle; provides a lot of variation

Plastic parts; but for the money it is just right

an OK lens for the price, but you will outgrow it fairly quickly if you care about your photography

There are much better lenses for not that much more money

Flexible lens perfect for someone new to SLRs and only someone with an ego wouldn't use it when on holiday. It's light and won't be a burden around your neck. It's images lack a bit of punch but clarity and colour can always be enhance in post.

Some lateral CA, manual focus ring is difficult to use; Not the most accurate autofocus results; I've noticed coma wide open in some shots; Colour rendering is a bit flat; Not exactly a solid design (should survive a slight knock, but not much more)

My Canon T1 came equipped with an EF-S 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Standard Zoom Lens. Right away, I got fantastic results with this combination. The lens (when paired with the T1) is as simple/automatic as can be, or if so inclined, as complex as you want to be.

This is a great lightweight all purpose lens when you can only take one lens and not sure what you are doing that day!
