Don’t buy it just for 5G.

Apple’s base-model iPhone now has an OLED display, unlike last year’s LCD on the iPhone 11. It has an incredibly fast chip. And it supports 5G, for whenever 5G is widely available in the US. Phone ships with a USB-C to Lightning cable, which is great if you’re the owner of a newer MacBook laptop.

In a vacuum, the camera is great; compared to last year’s iPhones, the camera isn’t jaw-droppingly better. Phone’s display has the same refresh rate as the display on iPhone 11. Battery life wasn’t noticeably better. No more earbuds in the box.

The iPhone 12 isn’t just the right iPhone for most people, it’s one of the best smartphones ever made.

The iPhone 12 sports a gorgeous new design, full 5G support, great cameras and even better performance. However, the lack of a charger in box and limited base storage are drawbacks. I’m of two minds about the iPhone 12.

Among the press and technology enthusiasts, the iPhone 12 Pro gets the focus. It’s the high-end model with all of the features, and price be damned, we all want one. But that overlooks the fact that most people have more reasonable expectations and budgets, and are immediately drawn to the standard iPhone 12. The iPhone 12 is the phone that gets people in the door (or on the website), where they then have the option of changing their choice to a Mini, Pro, or Pro Max. And that puts a lot of burden on the iPhone 12: It has to be really good because most people pick it by default. Here’s how well it lives up to the expectations. The iPhone 12 is a definite improvement over the iPhone 11. The new design gives the device a more modern look, and additions like MagSafe and 5G are helpful, helping future-proof the phone.

The iPhone 12 is a great all-around device and a good middle-ground between the cheaper iPhone 12 Mini and SE and the more expensive iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max. If you’re looking at the iPhone 12 series, the middle of the road iPhone 12 should be the one to get for most people.
