Apple iPhone 12 128GB - Black MGJA3X/A review

Apple's iPhone 12 is probably the one you should get. Save that $200 and put them towards some cool accessories.

New design is pretty and compact; OLED screen; finally! MagSafe is cool and has potential; Outstanding performance; One of the best cameras on a smartphone

No charger; no headphones in the box; 64 GB of storage is fine; but feels a bit stingy in current ecosystem; No telephoto lens; No ultra high refresh rate

Apple iPhone 12 review

We were big fans of last year’s iPhone 11, and huge improvements made to the design and display mean that its successor gets an equally emphatic thumbs-up. In fact, we’d go as far as to say that if you think you can live without the telephoto camera (and most people probably can), you should save yourself the £150-£200 (depending on which configuration you go for) and get the 12 ahead of the Pro. In so many ways it’s exactly the same phone, and is just as 5G-ready, though don’t let that be the reason you upgrade. Big or small phone lovers should hold on for verdicts on the two iPhones still to come this year, but for everyone else, the iPhone 12 is one of Apple’s very best to date.

Stunning to look at and impressively light in the hand; Finally an OLED display for the non-Pro iPhone; 5G future-proofed; Brilliant, versatile camera system ;

We’d rather have a telephoto than the ultra-wide; 5G may be here, but most people won’t find much of it yet; Battery life decent rather than brilliant ;

Apple iPhone 12 review: The iPhone for everyone

For that group of people who want a new iPhone, but just can't justify the price of the iPhone 12 Pro range, this is a great choice without having to feel like you are settling for second best.

OLED display; More powerful processor; Better camera experience; Dolby Vision support; MagSafe; 5G;

No telephoto lens; Smudges easily; Colours aren't as playful as previous years; Price bump over previous year;

iPhone 12 review: One of our highest-rated phones of all time

The iPhone 12 and 12 Pro mark the beginning of a new generation of iPhone. Support for 5G, a new hardware design and camera improvements are a significant step away from the iPhone X generation of devices. This is nothing new. Apple did something similar in 2010 with the iPhone 4 and in 2014 when it released the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.

5G support, a new striking design, improved cameras and four different models all add up to make the iPhone 12 an absolute unit.

New square-sided design; 5G support for both sub-6 and mmWave; Low-light photos and videos; MagSafe everything; Premium fit and finish; Fantastic autofocus for photos and videos; Solid build quality; Fastest phone we've ever tested;

$829 off-carrier price is high for the 12; Baseline 12 only has 64GB of storage; iPhone 12 offers most of the same features, design and build for less money;

Apple iPhone 12 Review

Hard-edged phones for a hard-edged year, Apple's iPhone 12 series brings a solid feel, excellent screens, better low-light camera performance, and improved network connectivity to America's most popular smartphone line. If you have an iPhone more than a year old, one of the four new iPhones is worth your money. The trick is figuring out which one. I'm the 5G guy, and during the iPhone 12 launch, Apple talked about 5G a lot. The iPhone 12 is the best 5G phone so far, but Verizon's and AT&T's so-called "nationwide" 5G aren't worth your time. T-Mobile's mid-band 5G does deliver improved performance, but T-Mobile doesn't have a map for that system, which makes it hard to find. That said, as I'll detail momentarily, the iPhone 12 series improves 4G performance enough that it's worth buying just for that. There are four new iPhones; and they're not all that different from one another. You're reading our main review of the iPhone 12 (starts at $799 for 64GB), which overlaps our review of...

The iPhone 12 series brings top-notch design, world-class connectivity, and an improved Night-mode camera to the nation's most popular phone. But with four similar models, which one is best? It's complicated.

Excellent Night mode camera; Better 4G (and 5G) than previous iPhones; Beautiful build; Solid battery life

Several similar, but not-quite-the-same models; AT&T and Verizon 5G underwhelms; Charging and power adapter situation is confusing
