iPad 10.2-inch review: The case for the least expensive iPad

Editors' note, Nov. 26, 2019: Apple's iPad strategy for 2019 was weird, with no new iPad Pro, but updates to the iPad Mini and iPad Air. The 10.2-inch iPad, however, might be the best bet. It has an older A10 processor, original Pencil support and a smart connector for smart keyboard (sold separately), and a slightly bigger screen. Spending as little as possible for an iPad makes a lot of sense right now, unless you have needs (or desires) that justify a fancier model. You could always look for last year's model on sale (which has the same processor, and also supports Pencil), but there's a case for the slight improvements here if you want to pay up for Apple's keyboard case. And, yes, iPadOS 13 generally runs just fine (except for the perpetual bugs, of course). As the dust settles on this year's iPad crop, this entry model is our Editors' Choice. Our original review of the 10.2-inch iPad is below.

The entry-level iPad is good enough for most users, especially with its new Smart Keyboard.

The 10.2-inch iPad has a larger display than before.; Smart Connector supports a few snap-on keyboard accessories.; One of the most affordable devices in Apple's gadget lineup.; iPad OS works better than expected and is well-optimized for the A10 processor.;

The base 32GB of storage isn't enough, meaning you'll really be paying $429 for the 128GB model; It's bigger and heavier than older model; The older A10 processor is the same as the previous iPad's, which you can still get on sale;

Apple iPad (2019) review: Still the best affordable tablet money can buy

With its slightly larger screen and the introduction of the new iPadOS 13 operating system, the 2019 iPad is the safe, familiar and affordable iPad option. It lacks some of the speed and design points of the higher-end models, but that's why this is the perfect iPad option for many – as there's still no better entry-level tablet around.

Affordable price point; Apple Pencil support (1st Gen); IPad OS great for multi-tasking apps; Smart Connector means keyboard and accessories support; Ideal performance for media consumption and apps;

Bezels a bit chunky; Processor is fairly old in Apple terms; No FaceID; Not an anti-reflective screen; No True Tone screen technology;

Apple iPad (2019) Review

While the seventh-generation iPad may look a lot like its predecessor, it's an entirely different beast. This year's entry-level Apple tablet sports a larger display for better multitasking, more RAM for faster performance, and a Smart Connector port for Apple's Smart Keyboard and other accessories. These updates, combined with iPadOS, make the $329 iPad an ideal starter tablet, and potentially even a laptop replacement, earning our Editors' Choice award. Pricing The iPad has a recycled aluminum back that comes in black, gold, or silver. The base model has 32GB of storage and sells for $329 for the Wi-Fi model, and $459 for the cellular version. You can also get the tablet with 128GB of storage, at $459 for the Wi-Fi model and $559 for cellular. If you want to use it as a laptop of sorts, you'll want to pick up a Smart Keyboard ($159) and maybe an Apple Pencil ($99). Together with the 32GB Wi-Fi iPad, that comes to $587, or about $500 less than the least expensive MacBook Air. D...

With its larger display, support for Apple's Smart Keyboard, and iPadOS, the least-expensive iPad is a terrific tablet and potentially even a laptop replacement.

Larger display for better multitasking; Smart Connector lets you use Apple's keyboard cover or third-party option; iPadOS brings many software improvements

Mediocre cameras; Large bezels

Apple iPad (2019) review review

Great price; Can now be used with Apple’s Smart Keyboard; Bigger screen, which matters no matter how small the increase; It’s an iPad – they’re good ;

Nothing to entice those who bought an iPad last year; Non-laminated screen isn’t as good for drawing; A new processor would have been nice;

Apple iPad 7 10.2" 2019 Wifi (32GB, Space Grey) - Grade (Excellent) review

I had an iPad air 2 with 16G. Sold it and upgraded to this new iPad with 128G. Works great. No more memory constraints. Faster. A tad heavier, but it's minimal and I'll get used to it. Got an AmFilm tempered glass shield and a nice leatherette case. I'm set. Just what I wanted.

Apple iPad 7 10.2" 2019 Wifi (32GB, Space Grey) - Grade (Excellent) review

Great size and buttery smooth performance. Setup was super easy and worked flawlessly. For the price it seems hard to beat. Love that it still has the standard headphone jack! It weighs a tiny bit more than the 9.7 version but with the larger screen you would expect some weight change.

Apple iPad 7 review

The Apple iPhone 14 isn’t a huge upgrade on the iPhone 13, yet it still is a great phone with a top camera, good battery life and all the iOS benefits.

Clever safety features, Very good battery life, Reliable camera, Fun colours, You’ve got an ageing iPhone: If you’re on an iPhone 11 or older, then the changes here will make a notable difference.

Stuck on a 60Hz display, Minimal differences to the iPhone 13, You’ve got an iPhone 13: The changes from Apple’s previous phone aren’t enough to warrant an upgrade this year.

Apple iPad 7 review

The Apple iPhone 14 is no match for the just-released iPhone 14 Pro, but if you ignore that, it’s one of the most effective phones around.

Great cameras, front and back, Fast performance, Good battery life, Innovative safety features

Design too familiar, Some average features
