Scooters can be fun for all ages, even adults because they give a similar experience to riding a skateboard along with control and stability of a handlebar. If you want your child to enjoy the fun experience of scooting, it's important to choose the right model of scooter.

They can range extensively from three-wheeled micro versions ideal for small children all the way to two-wheeled enhanced control pro models. In this buying guide, you will learn just what you need to look for in a scooter so that you can pick the right model for your child.

Age

Before you go shopping for a scooter, you need to consider your child's age. This will have a dramatic impact on the model you pick. Obviously, you wouldn't want to choose a large, aluminum pro scooter for a four-year-old, and a 12-year-old is going to want something much more than a basic, three-wheeled model.

Types of scooters

There are essentially four different types you could choose from:

Micro Scooter

ideal for children between ages three and five, sometimes these scooters will include two front wheels for stability. Different models will include specialty steering mechanisms and other details for better safety and stability important for small children.

Maxi Scooter

ideal for kids between the ages of six and 12, this scooter gives more control to the driver. It is made to be durable even under the toughest of situations. It includes wider footplates and adjustable handlebars to suit any sized child.

Aluminium Scooter

there are different models of this variety that can suit children anywhere from age five and upward. It will have the classic look you expect from a mini scooter. Adjustable handlebars will make the scooter easy to adjust as the child grows taller.

Stunt Scooter

older children may enjoy doing tricks on ramps and other surfaces and they will need the stunt scooter. Only suitable for children ages 12 and up, the scooters will include features designed to make them lightweight, durable, and easy to use during tricks and stunts.

Features

Different model scooters will have an array of different features to suit your child's skill level and need. It's important to think about all of those details before you pick a model to purchase.

Of course, some things are purely preference, like colour. Some models come in a rainbow of colours while others are only basic black or silver. It's a good idea to find out from your child if they wanted a specific colour of scooter, but this shouldn't be the deciding factor. You do need to consider all of the other features and details to choose a model that is safe and dependable.

Some things you can look for in a mini scooter include:

  • Number of wheels'

  • Adjustable handlebars

  • Materials

  • Easy to use grips on the handlebars

  • Width of footpad (wider options are more suitable for older children)

  • Whether or not it will stand on its own

  • Portability (will the scooter break down for easier storage?)

  • Does it work with handlebar only steering or will tilt and lean work as well?

  • Type of brakes for safer control

Keep in mind that safety should be a high priority on your list, so make sure you consider the right types of brakes. This is especially important for older children who may use the scooter at higher speeds. Rear brakes should be substantial enough to control the scooter in any situation.

Price Ranges

Scooter models can range in price depending on their features and qualities. Of course, a basic, aluminium model will stay at the low end of the price scale while stunt or pro models will cost substantially more. Models made for older children will likely cost more than the smaller micro mini varieties as well. You can spend as much or as little as you would like for the scooter you choose.

Brand can have an effect on the price of the scooter as well. You can choose from top brands, like MGP, Envy, and Mambo or pick from licensed character designs like Barbie, Thomas, and Dora depending on the age and preference of your child.
