Life Jackets Buying Guide
Some people call them life jackets. Others call them life vests. Whatever you call it, a life jacket - or life vest - is an essential item whenever you take to the water. Buying the right one is also incredibly important.
It Must Fit...Perfectly
The perfect fit is essential, so always try on a life jacket. Don't just go by the recommended fitting suggestions that might be printed on the life vest. Get the best fit for your body shape.
Buying For Children
Many parents make the potentially grave mistake of buying a life jacket for their children to grow into. The thinking is that by buying a size or two larger, they'll save money on buying replacement vests each year. Life jackets that are too large can compromise buoyancy in the water, and even slip off. Whatever the age, the life jacket must fit perfectly NOW!
Where Will You use It?
Some life jackets are designed for open waters i.e. the ocean, and some for inshore waters, such as rivers and lakes. They offer differing degrees of buoyancy and protection, so be sure to ask an expert on the life jacket best suited to where you're going.
Make Sure It Complies
National and international standards for life jackets are very strict, and for good reason. A jacket that complies with these standards is recognised for the quality of its construction, and safety features. Buying a life jacket from a dubious source might be cheap - but it's unlikely to be compliant.
A Bright Idea
Brightly coloured life jackets are much more visible in the water. Look for non-fade material when shopping around.
