Zeiss Batis 1.8/85 Review

Zeiss makes an 85mm lens that is, for all intents and purposes, as optically perfect as a lens can be. It's the Otus 85/1.4 ($4,490.00 at Amazon) , and it's huge, heavy, manual focus only, and priced at nearly five grand. For the rest of us—at least the rest of us that shoot with Sony's mirrorless camera system—Zeiss makes the Batis 1.8/85 ($1,199). The lens isn't quite as perfect as the Otus, but it renders similarly, supports autofocus, and while it's not a budget lens by any means, it's a bargain when compared with the Otus. That make the Batis 1.8/85 an easy pick for Editors' Choice honors. DesignThe Batis is styled much like newer Zeiss manual focus SLR lenses, including the Otus and Milvus series. But it's an autofocus lens, compatible with both full-frame and APS-C Sony mirrorless cameras. The barrel is black metal, with the Zeiss brand badge on the side in blue. The manual focus ring is finished in smooth black rubber, and sits at the rear of the barrel, near the base of t...

The Zeiss Batis 1.8/85 isn't a perfect lens, but it's close. Sony Alpha shooters should take note.

Very sharp form edge to edge; Wide aperture; Dust- and splash-resistant construction

Pricey; Noticeable pincushion distortion

Carl Zeiss Batis 1.8/85 (E mount) - Brand New review

While it's a shame that picture and sound quality haven't been upgraded, the iPhone 13 was great in these regards and the iPhone 14 is, too Excellent display Admirable headphone performance Solid build quality No upgrades to picture or sound Familiar design Notch is still present

Carl Zeiss Batis 1.8/85 (E mount) - Brand New review

The Apple iPhone 14 is no match for the just-released iPhone 14 Pro, but if you ignore that, it’s one of the most effective phones around.

Great cameras, front and back, Fast performance, Good battery life, Innovative safety features

Design too familiar, Some average features

Carl Zeiss Batis 1.8/85 (E mount) - Brand New review

Apple's latest non-Pro iPhone is superb - it's just that it's strikingly similar to last year's effort.

Still an incredible smartphone, Brilliant battery life gets a bit better, Excellent camera system gets a bit better

Last year’s Pro hardware, Wireless charging slow by modern standards, No USB-C; it’s now well overdue

Carl Zeiss Batis 1.8/85 (E mount) - Brand New review

More like an iPhone 13S. The generational upgrades for the iPhone 14 are limited to a few subtle changes. At the same time, however, the base price climbs to 800 USD, while the only true innovation happens inside the iPhone 14 Pro series.

excellent OLED display, dust- and waterproof, fast Wi-Fi, wide range of supported frequencies, great camera, very fast performance, good battery life

display limited to 60 Hz, charging rate limited to 20 watts, no macro lens, wide notch

Carl Zeiss Batis 1.8/85 (E mount) - Brand New review

“The iPhone 14 isn't a huge upgrade compared to its predecessor. But with a great design, screen, performance, and cameras, that's far from a bad thing at all.”

Comfortable, high-end build, OLED screen looks fantastic, A15 chip performs great, Good camera upgrades, Dependable battery life, Helpful safety features

60Hz display, No telephoto camera, eSIM might be a pain for some

Carl Zeiss Batis 1.8/85 (E mount) - Brand New review

Hannah Stryker / Review Geek The iPhone 14 is the latest iteration of Apple’s flagship device. Since its launch, the iPhone has set the standard of what a smartphone is, what it does, and how it looks. Fifteen years later, it’s still doing that.

Top-notch cameras, Amazing display, Snappy performance, Great battery life

It's just "this year's iPhone"

Carl Zeiss Batis 1.8/85 (E mount) - Brand New review

The iPhone 14 isn’t much of an upgrade over the iPhone 13, but it’s still a great device and an upgrade for anyone coming from the iPhone 11 or older.

Great camera, Good battery, Emergency features are cool, Still excellent performance

Display could use some upgrades
