Zeiss Batis 2/40 CF Review

The Zeiss Batis 2/40 CF ($1,299) is part of the company's line of full-frame lenses for the Sony mirrorless camera system. It captures an angle of view that's just a little wider than a standard, and focuses close enough for nearly macro results. It delivers the premium quality you expect from Zeiss, and is priced accordingly. It's a lens that will make anyone in love with the focal length and close focus capability happy, but there are a number of alternatives to consider if you're shopping for a moderately wide prime model. Design The Batis 2/40 matches the look and feel of others in the series. It's finished in matte black, with a metal barrel, a smooth rubber focus ring, and an OLED information panel. This 40mm f/2 measures 3.7 by 3.6 inches (HD), weighs 12.7 ounces, and supports 67mm front filters. The 40mm focal length isn't common. Not every camera maker offers a lens in between a 35mm and 50mm, and those that do have gained almost cult-like followings. There is one oth...

The Zeiss Batis 2/40 CF is a moderate wide-angle lens with near macro focus and crisp optics, but loses light when working close.

Sharp results, even at f/2; 1:3.3 macro focus; AF limiter switch; Dust and splash protection

Loses light at close focus; Not stabilized; Pricey

Carl ZEISS Batis 40mm f/2 CF Lens for Sony E - Brand New review

Quality, lack of compromise and elegance of design. These are the things that characterise the new lens, one which I have found very exciting to use. It also does not fall into the trap of being clinically sharp without having that indefinable character.

Excellent sharpness, Insignificant CA levels, No flare, Virtually no distortion, Modest vignetting, Relaxed, pleasant bokeh, Fast, silent AF, Character, Versatile focal length

Carl ZEISS Batis 40mm f/2 CF Lens for Sony E - Brand New review

The Apple iPhone 14 isn’t a huge upgrade on the iPhone 13, yet it still is a great phone with a top camera, good battery life and all the iOS benefits.

Clever safety features, Very good battery life, Reliable camera, Fun colours, You’ve got an ageing iPhone: If you’re on an iPhone 11 or older, then the changes here will make a notable difference.

Stuck on a 60Hz display, Minimal differences to the iPhone 13, You’ve got an iPhone 13: The changes from Apple’s previous phone aren’t enough to warrant an upgrade this year.

While it's a shame that picture and sound quality haven't been upgraded, the iPhone 13 was great in these regards and the iPhone 14 is, too Excellent display Admirable headphone performance Solid build quality No upgrades to picture or sound Familiar design Notch is still present

The Apple iPhone 14 is no match for the just-released iPhone 14 Pro, but if you ignore that, it’s one of the most effective phones around.

Great cameras, front and back, Fast performance, Good battery life, Innovative safety features

Design too familiar, Some average features

Carl ZEISS Batis 40mm f/2 CF Lens for Sony E - Brand New review

Apple's latest non-Pro iPhone is superb - it's just that it's strikingly similar to last year's effort.

Still an incredible smartphone, Brilliant battery life gets a bit better, Excellent camera system gets a bit better

Last year’s Pro hardware, Wireless charging slow by modern standards, No USB-C; it’s now well overdue

More like an iPhone 13S. The generational upgrades for the iPhone 14 are limited to a few subtle changes. At the same time, however, the base price climbs to 800 USD, while the only true innovation happens inside the iPhone 14 Pro series.

excellent OLED display, dust- and waterproof, fast Wi-Fi, wide range of supported frequencies, great camera, very fast performance, good battery life

display limited to 60 Hz, charging rate limited to 20 watts, no macro lens, wide notch

Carl ZEISS Batis 40mm f/2 CF Lens for Sony E - Brand New review

“The iPhone 14 isn't a huge upgrade compared to its predecessor. But with a great design, screen, performance, and cameras, that's far from a bad thing at all.”

Comfortable, high-end build, OLED screen looks fantastic, A15 chip performs great, Good camera upgrades, Dependable battery life, Helpful safety features

60Hz display, No telephoto camera, eSIM might be a pain for some

Carl ZEISS Batis 40mm f/2 CF Lens for Sony E - Brand New review

Hannah Stryker / Review Geek The iPhone 14 is the latest iteration of Apple’s flagship device. Since its launch, the iPhone has set the standard of what a smartphone is, what it does, and how it looks. Fifteen years later, it’s still doing that.

Top-notch cameras, Amazing display, Snappy performance, Great battery life

It's just "this year's iPhone"

Carl ZEISS Batis 40mm f/2 CF Lens for Sony E - Brand New review

The iPhone 14 isn’t much of an upgrade over the iPhone 13, but it’s still a great device and an upgrade for anyone coming from the iPhone 11 or older.

Great camera, Good battery, Emergency features are cool, Still excellent performance

Display could use some upgrades
