One of the most popular super heroes of all-time is back in action for the video game adaptation of the recent movie by the same title, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine".
-Plenty of eye candy; -Epic soundtrack; -Perfect voice acting taken straight from the actors of the movie; -Top-notch sound effects; -Lots of variation to keep the action fresh; -Difficulty scales up perfectly based on which setting you choose; -Collectibles are never far too out of the way or...
-Not much of a reason to replay the game after completion; -No online play at all
Everyones favorite Canadian mutant not only has a blockbuster hit at the theatres, this summer, but it looks like the adamantium bond superhero could have a hit on the small screen too. Find out why in our full review.
Wolverine done right; bloody right
Glitches; surprisingly gets old fast
We've grown quite fond of the character of Wolverine, largely thanks to the comics as well as the first two X-Men flicks. Even though the movie marked a solid debut at the US Box Office, critics and viewers had mostly bad things to say about Hollywood's latest superhero blockbuster.
The character is cool to say the least and lays foundation for a solid action game; a huge number of combos and special attacks to master (making the game really enjoyable for several hours); looks and sounds really good
Story's unclear and incomplete; characters aren't appealing with the exception of Wolverine; fighting an endless fight against the same grunts and bosses; all placed in the same Goddamn levels
The best thing about good-looking, regenerating near-immortals is the amount of punishment you can inflict on them out of impotent jealousy. Luckily, Wolverine was born to soak up all the pain you've got, and it's fair to say that Logan spends a good proportion of the game with his gutcage blown...
+ Looks fantastic; + Just enough variety to keep you going
- Instadeath platforming + reload times = seethe; ? Does it seem like a bit of a rush job toward the end to you too
The game based on the movie, which is apparently only loosely based off the Marvel X-men comics. Who doesn't want to know where Wizard magazine's #1 Comic book character of all time came from? How did ‘Jimmy' become Logan, and ultimately Wolverine?
This is a fairly easy game to summarize: If God of War and Uncharted got together to have babies, Wolverine would be their offspring. While not as polished or innovative as the games that inspire it, Origins definitely sets the bar pretty high for future movie-licensed games.
When it comes to super hero video games based on movies, many experienced gamers tend to stay clear. Incomplete, rushed and full of glitches are often the words used to describe even some of the most promising movie based titles.
On a sadder note however, I did encounter several glitches during gameplay that somewhat ruined it. Ocassionally glitching into objects or behind walls, camera angles fluctuating rapidly and on one occasion I actually fell off the planet. lol.
Essentially minor flaws don't detract from the fact this game is alot of fun. This is a must-buy for Wolverine fans, and makes a lot of strides for the action genre in general.
