The Western Digital takes home an award by offering a capacious drive for surprisingly little cash
I use this drive to provide Time Machine backups for the 3 Macs in the house. Two of my Macs have USB2 ports, so these ports dominate the write speeds to the disk. Even though the TM backups took 20 or 30 min each, these were the first time backups which amounted to 60-90GB.
Silent, low power, reliable (so far); The small form factor and self-powered aspects are pluses as well
None; Update(2016/Jan): I used it a few times (maybe 4) and had it unplugged sitting on my desk; I used it just now for another Time Machine backup and it started to act weird; It would unmount spontaneously.
Along with the My Book update this week, WD has released a new version of the My Passport and My Passport for Mac, the company's popular portable storage solution. This re-release is highlighted by a new modern design that features a textured underside and is available in six distinct colors: Black,...
Same reliable hardware; Back up software works great and is seamless to use; Its new design is coupled with vibrant color options
Performance hasn't improved over the previous version
If you want to store a lot of data, and maybe even use colors to categorize your data, the new My Passport portable drive from WD is for you. The drive has up to 4TB of storage space (also available in 3TB, 2TB and 1TB) and comes in six vivid (mostly) color options: black, yellow, red, white, orange...
The new WD My Passport portable drive has lots of storage space, good performance and supports strong encryption; It's available in some vivid color options and comes in an eye-catching design
There's no USB-C (so no future-proofing) and the high-capacity versions of the drive are bulky
I bought this drive to transfer files from my old Windows XP Professional Computer to my new computer running on Windows 10. Since Win XP can only see drives up to 2 Tb, I bought this small 1 Tb drive to make sure the transfer would go without problems. Was I wrong !!!
Excellent drive
I bought two for mirrored backup and archival storage. Works as advertised. Wish it was thinner, but not a big deal. A bit larger than a pack of cigarettes and about as thick. Have not tested performance since that's not terribly important to me - seems to be quick enough.
Bought Solely To Use With My PS4 As Extended Storage Due To The 500gig was Not Big Enough To Store My Collection Of Games Via Digital Copies. Powered Buy USB There For No Other Power Outlet Needed And Some what Matching Design Too.
I bought this a couple of weeks ago to replace my older 3TB WD My Book (which is still going) and as usual WD hasn't let me down, the build quality is spot on and the performance is excellent (see attached screenshot of ATTO).
I've been using a WD HD as my backup drive for a little over a year. It's my Time Machine drive on my desktop so it stays plugged in and on all the time. So far so good. Their HDs seem to be well made and reliable. The prices are competitive.
