Trip down memory lane

Bought this as I was a huge fan of the cartoon as a child. I was hoping this was at least ok but unfortunately it just seems like a cheap cash in. Very little story line and really basic gameplay. The gameplay wouldn't matter if there was a decent story to it maybe even following the cartoon.

TRANSFORMERS: Devastation (Xbox One) Review

Taking the developmental reigns from High Moon Studios, Platinum Games – best known for Bayonetta and Metal Gear Rising Revengeance – has put their iconic rock'em sock'em action flourish on the beloved Transformers universe with Transformers: Devastation.

Looks just like the cartoon; scratches that nostalgia itch; Fast paced and smooth combat

Level design isn't great and has invisible walls; Very limited replay value

Prime Time

If your memories of a Saturday morning were running downstairs and flicking the telly on to bathe your sleepy eyes in the pulsating glow, flashy lights, and booming explosions of the original Transformers, boy could Devastation be the game for you.

True to the TV show; Great spectacle in boss fights; Slick; enjoyable combat

Short campaign; Over priced

Battling bots

Nostalgia can be a cruel and misleading force. The part of our brain that wants desperately to relive our past experiences can sometimes trick us into eagerly consuming games and books and movies that ultimately turn out to be crassly recycled garbage merely masquerading as the thing we once loved.

Recaptures Transformers' glory without relying solely on nostalgia; Art style feels lifted directly from classic Saturday morning cartoons; Combat proves surprisingly deep; demanding; and rewarding; Plenty of big ol' boss battles

Relatively short campaign and a lack of supporting content; Minimal variety in gameplay and mission objectives; Convoluted crafting system adds nothing

Transformers Devastation Review

Transformers Devastation's nostalgia-fueled fisticuffs are a fun way to revisit the classic TV show. Sophisticated combo-based combat delivers a fast and furious barrage of action, but the gear and perks systems left me wondering why they were there at all in a game all about over-the-top boss...

Fun combat; Great graphics; Good fan service

Crappy loot; Bland levels

Transformers Devastation

This is Bayonetta dressed up in robot clothes, which is a Very Good Thing. Brilliantly playable, and full of Transformers fan-service, only its brevity and simplistic level design let it down.

Looks and sounds like the 1980s cartoon; Superb; AAA-feeling combat; Grimlock; the transforming robot dinosaur

Disappointingly basic level design; Only about 5 hours long; Requires little variation in technique to succeed

Look, let's not waste time here. I'm going to get right to the point and say that I love Transformers: Devastation . Absolutely love it. No bones about it, I think it's an awesome game. Why am I so nuts about it? Well, let me set the stage.

Realizing it really looks as good as it does in trailers

Transformers: Devastation – Review

Ignoring the fact that Platinum Games' staff probably resorted to sleeping in the office and putting in some serious overtime, Transformers: Devastation is proof of what a studio can achieve while on a tight schedule and what was likely to be a small budget too.
