Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 Di III VXD G2 Review

Tamron has established itself as a true value lens brand for Sony mirrorless photographers. We praised its first low-cost F2.8 zoom for the system, the 28-75mm F2.8 Di III RXD, when we reviewed it a few years ago. Tamron's engineers saw some room for improvement, though, so the company is back with an updated edition, the 28-75mm F2.8 Di III VXD G2 ($899). The G2 uses a new optical formula that promises more pleasing bokeh and sports a snappier linear focus motor for better accuracy. At around $900, it remains a compelling (and more affordable) alternative to Sony's premium FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM, and a good fit for photographers who can't stretch their budget to get our Editors' Choice winner, the $1,099 Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN Art.Exclusively for Sony On the outside, the G2 edition of the lens doesn't stray far from Tamron's first take. It's slightly larger at 4.6 by 3.0 inches (HD), but weighs the same (1.2 pounds) and supports the same size of front filters (67mm). One of the few...

Tamron's 28-75mm F2.8 Di III VXD G2 lens doesn't cover the 24mm focal length like other standard zooms, but it offers a strong value for Sony photographers because of its F2.8 optics, fast focus, and moisture-resistant construction.

Crisp F2.8 optics; Moisture-resistant build; Full-frame sensor coverage; Snappy, linear focus motor; USB-C-configurable focus controls; Sony system compatibility

Omits useful 24mm focal length at wide end; Costs more than predecessor

Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 Lens (Sony E) - Brand New review

The Samyang XP 50mm F1.2 is a very fast, high quality standard prime lens for full-frame DSLR and mirrorless cameras, but it's also very large and very heavy for a 50mm optic (even heavier than the XP 85mm f/1.2 lens), it doesn't offer the best sharpness when shooting wide-open, and it's only...

Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 Lens (Sony E) - Brand New review

For full frame 35mm-format cameras, the standard lens is something around the 50mm mark. This gives a natural perspective similar to that perceived by the human eye. It also happens to be the lens that was supplied with almost every 35mm film camera, until the standard zoom took over.

The Apple iPhone 14 isn’t a huge upgrade on the iPhone 13, yet it still is a great phone with a top camera, good battery life and all the iOS benefits.

The Apple iPhone 14 is no match for the just-released iPhone 14 Pro, but if you ignore that, it’s one of the most effective phones around.

Great cameras, front and back, Fast performance, Good battery life, Innovative safety features

Design too familiar, Some average features

Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 Lens (Sony E) - Brand New review

Apple's latest non-Pro iPhone is superb - it's just that it's strikingly similar to last year's effort.

Still an incredible smartphone, Brilliant battery life gets a bit better, Excellent camera system gets a bit better

Last year’s Pro hardware, Wireless charging slow by modern standards, No USB-C; it’s now well overdue

More like an iPhone 13S. The generational upgrades for the iPhone 14 are limited to a few subtle changes. At the same time, however, the base price climbs to 800 USD, while the only true innovation happens inside the iPhone 14 Pro series.

excellent OLED display, dust- and waterproof, fast Wi-Fi, wide range of supported frequencies, great camera, very fast performance, good battery life

display limited to 60 Hz, charging rate limited to 20 watts, no macro lens, wide notch

Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 Lens (Sony E) - Brand New review

“The iPhone 14 isn't a huge upgrade compared to its predecessor. But with a great design, screen, performance, and cameras, that's far from a bad thing at all.”

Comfortable, high-end build, OLED screen looks fantastic, A15 chip performs great, Good camera upgrades, Dependable battery life, Helpful safety features

60Hz display, No telephoto camera, eSIM might be a pain for some
