Tamron 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD – UK Exclusive Review

Superzoom lenses have been, and always will be, a popular choice for many photographers. They're often the first lens people look at after growing out of a standard kit lens and are typically defined by a moderate wideangle start and a reasonably long telephoto finish, differentiating from standard...

Tamron 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD lens Model B028

Announced in late June 2017, Tamron's 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD lens (Model B028) provides a welcome extension to the 18.8x zoom range of the 16-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD Macro lens we reviewed in July 2014. Like that lens, it's designed for APS-C DSLR cameras.

The Tamron 18-400mm lens is a fun interchangeable lens that will serve you well for many different types of photographs. You'll be amazed at the different types of looks you can achieve through the wide focal range of this lens, which makes this model a great lens to take when traveling.

Amazing focal range; Low price tag versus other large zoom lenses; Both Nikon DSLR and Canon DSLR versions available; Improved image quality throughout range versus previous Tamron zoom lenses; Easy to use controls on the lens; Lens moves through its zoom range smoothly; Reasonably good autofocus...

Image quality not good enough for advanced photographers; Noticeable barrel distortion at smallest focal length; Slight sharpness problem at maximum focal length; Some sharpness issues at high f-stop numbers; Some chromatic aberration problems; Not really a weatherproof model

REVIEW: Tamron 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD Review

The Super zoom has always been a popular choice for travel and general photography, although until now there has been a limit on the telephoto end of the scale around 300mm. Now Tamron has pushed the technology beyond that, breaking the 300mm barrier and offering a staggering 18-400mm range.

Tamron 18-400 mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD

The race of the focal length range has started and Tamron have become the leader of breaking records. Already in 2007 several 18-250 mm models were launched on the market by different producers and in 2009 the customers got the Tamron AF 18–270 mm f/3.5–6.3 Di II VC LD Asph. (IF) MACRO.

Very universal focal range; Good image quality in the frame centre; Proper correction of longitudinal chromatic aberration; Lack of problems with spherical aberration; Sensible coma correction at the shortest focal length; Low vignetting at longer focal lengths; Efficient image stabilization

Weak image quality at the maximum relative aperture on the edge of the frame and across the whole focal range; High level of lateral chromatic aberration at 50 and 400 mm; Significant distortion at 18 mm and in the 35-100 mm focal range; A bit too high astigmatism; Slow autofocus which needs further...

Great lens!

I had to wait for this as it was a special order but it was well worth it. I hated having to carry more than one lens and now I don't have to. It takes great close-ups, great distance shots and of course everything in-between.

Tamron 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD

The Tamron 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD covers an incredible zoom range, from wide angle to super telephoto, and while it doesn't match lenses with shorter ratios in image quality, it betters them in convenience.

22.2x zoom ratio; Solid image quality; Image stabilization; Moisture-resistant design; 1:2.9 macro magnification; Available for Nikon and Canon SLRs

Wide-open performance suffers beyond 300mm; Shows some chromatic aberration at longer focal lengths; Visible distortion; Focus ring rotates during AF

Tamron 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD Lens Review

If manufacturing, design and economic constraints were not issues, the perfect lens would cover a huge range of focal lengths, from wide angle to long telephoto and a very wide, constant maximum aperture would be always available.
