SteelSeries Aerox 9 Wireless review: Click to your heart’s content

SteelSeries Aerox 9 Wireless mouse makes me feel like I’m drunk with power. I’m used to gaming mice that give me a few mappable buttons, but not one that lets me map virtually every keyboard command I need under my thumb without a long, complicated setup. It almost feels like I’m cheating. The Aerox 9 Wireless is a lightweight MMO/MOBA mouse that’s a direct competitor to Razer’s standout Naga line. What’s particularly notable is that it weighs in at under 100 grams without tinkering, an almost unheard-of feat for a gaming mouse of this breed. And that still doesn’t even cover why it’s quickly becoming my go-to mouse. With its fantastic customization suite, lightweight design, and competitive feature set, the Aerox 9 might finally dethrone the Naga Pro as the best MMO mouse on the market. I’m about to run through a lot of features packed into the Aerox 9 Wireless, but before I do, I want to emphasize its weight: 89g. If you’ve used an MMO-style mouse before, you’ll know why that number ...

Lightweight for its class; Sturdy switches; High customization potential; Handy CPI toggle; Competitive price and features;

Button grid can be tricky; Restrictive USB-C dongle;

SteelSeries Aerox 9 Wireless Review

In this era of esports, new MMO mice are few and far between. Defined by a side keypad with six or more buttons instead of the usual forward and back inputs, MMO mice fly in the face of modern gaming mouse trends: Make 'em light, make 'em fast, and stick to only what you need. SteelSeries' Aerox 9 Wireless ($149.99) offers an even rarer proposition—a mouse that combines these two opposing designs. Like the company's other Aerox mice, it features a high-performance sensor and a honeycombed chassis that reduces weight. Unlike them, however, it puts a full 12-button keypad under your thumb. The Aerox 9 Wireless is a unique and captivating hybrid, though a couple of stumbles keep it from truly embodying the best of both worlds.Building a Better MMO Mouse The Aerox 9 looks more like an esports mouse than something made for RPGs. Most MMO mice tend to be wide and heavy, emphasizing quick access to an arsenal of hotkeys rather than the need to click around at top speed. The SteelSeries' ...

The SteelSeries Aerox 9 Wireless neatly blends MMO and esports mouse conventions, but a few snags keep it from greatness.

Huge number of buttons; Light for an MMO mouse; Good battery life; Flexible connection options

Side buttons are hard to navigate; Not as light as top esports mice; Limited onboard memory features

Great for FPS and MMORPGs - First unit was faulty however.

Updating my review. So. When I initially got this mouse, it was faulty out of the box. Within two months it would no longer connect over wireless or wired modes. For this reason, I cannot give it a five star, despite having a functional replacement unit. I got in contact with “Chubs (SteelSeries Customer Experience)” over email. Excellent support. We concluded that it was an issue hardware side. For that reason, I struggle to recommend this strongly. I got my replacement unit and I've had it for about two weeks with no issue. This mouse is absurdly lightweight. Plays fantastic in FPS games such as CoD, and I feel like I've played the best that I ever have in years. The side buttons are great for MMORPG too, such as FFXIV. They're customizable too so I have some macros set up like auto clicker and app control (Spotify) in a separate profile to when I'm playing games that actually require all 12 buttons. Speaking of which, the buttons take a little getting used to, but it's not too hard to figure out where which buttons are. I will say it could be a little difficult to comfortably reach all buttons if you have small hands. It's an expenny mouse for sure, but if you need a mouse that's great for FPS games and MMORPGs both, from my research and experience, there's nothing better.

Faulty out the box; broke within two months

I bought this for both the lightweight advantage it provides in FPS games, as well as the great ease of access with keybindings for MMORPGs. For the most part it was great at both, however within the first few days, it would just disconnect randomly. I could look past that with a quick switch off and switch on. But today, two months after I purchased this mouse, it now will not work. It doesn't connect with the adapter over 2.4Ghz wireless. It isn't recognized as a device under bluetooth. It doesn't connect while plugged in directly to my PC. If this was a $50 mouse I would've just bought another, but this thing is $300. This just tells me that in 2022, wireless technology is trash, just like this mouse. Stick to wired mice and avoid this, because it isn't worth the price. I'm contacting the team about a replacement unit. If it works, I'll update the review.

Bad design

I've had the mouse for ~3 months now and the left click button suddenly just stopped working. In general the side buttons and weight of the mouse are great, but at the end of the day the left click needs to keep working. I'd expected there to be an internal shield between the electronics and the mouse plate but no, it's just holes for skin & dust to fall into.
