Sony FE 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 G OSS Review

Sony's mirrorless system has matured in many ways since its 2013 launch. There are a bevy of first- and third-party lenses available, including ultra-wide-angle, macro, fast primes, and even specialty manual focus options. Telephoto coverage has been a weak point, though, with the FE 24-240mm F3.5-6.3 OSS as the longest telephoto option available to this point. The FE 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 G OSS ($1,199.99) extends that reach, although it doesn't have as much wide-angle coverage. It's an excellent performer, and a solid choice for covering wildlife and sports with the Sony system, especially when paired with an APS-C body like the Alpha 6300. Design The 70-300mm ($1,273.00 at Amazon) is a hefty lens, but reasonably sized for a telezoom with full-frame coverage. It measures 5.7 by 3.3 inches (HD) when set to the 70mm position, weighs about 1.9 pounds, and supports 72mm front filters. It extends when zoomed, and includes a lock switch so you can prevent the barrel from creeping out inad...

The Sony FE 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 G OSS is a solid telezoom lens for full-frame mirrorless cameras, but a narrow aperture limits use in dim light.

Good telephoto zoom range; Strong image quality; Quick autofocus; Sturdy build; Optical stabilization; All-weather design

Pricey; Narrow aperture; Some pincushion distortion

Sony FE 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G OSS Review

The Sony FE 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G OSS fills an important gap in Sony's FE lineup as it offers a high-quality mainstream telephoto-zoom lens option at a relatively approachable price tag.

Sony FE 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G OSS SEL70300G lens

Announced in late March 2016, the Sony FE 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 G OSS lens has been designed primarily for use on the company's full-frame α7 bodies. It's the first Sony α E-mount lens to reach a 300mm focal length and the company's first E-mount zoom to cover a 70mm to 300mm range.

Sony FE 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G OSS

The Sony FE 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G OSS makes a solid case for itself by offering a useful focal range incorporating the longest reach of any E-mount lens, and all in a relatively compact package.

Very sharp lens

I bought this lens for use with an A6000. It is used alongside an 18-105 OSS G, which I can compare it with. They are used mainly for nature and sports. The 18-105 takes great photos, is very light and portable and has a constant 4.0 aperture, and a constant length (size); However, I find it is not...

I got this lens to complement my SONY16-50MM f/2.8 on my A77M2. I mainly use it for nature photography. The construction is a perfect balance of weather-sealed solid construction without being too heavy to carry along on hikes. (Of course f/2.8 would be better, but imagine the weight!

The 70-300mm G lens is a beautiful zoom. Pictures are sharp as a tack across the focal length and aperture. I use it both on mt a77 and a850 with wonderful results. The only draw back is the weight, it's pretty heavy.

Rugged design; fast focus; superior image quality

Heavy

She works hard for her money

I bought this lens earlier in the year and have been using it consistently since for wildlife and bird shooting. It doesn't do great in really low light but with the correct ISO in lower light it's fine. The focus is decently fast and the bokeh is nice.

Excellent, but . . .

Beyond question this is a seriously good lens - at the price it needs to be. It is the kind of lens you use with a camera on the back, rather than use the camera with a lens on the front!

Easily Interchangeable; Strong Construction

Barrel rotation on zoom; Expensive; Heavy; No tripod bush; Zoom lock only at 70mm - no intermediate stops
