The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 III (aka RX100M3) is quite a different animal from its sibling, the Editors' Choice RX100M2 . With a manufacturer price of $800 (£700, AU$1,100) it costs about $150 (£110, AU$200) more, and targets enthusiasts willing to pay more for a faster lens, improved video quality, and an electronic viewfinder. And the M3 is an appealing camera for that group, albeit not without causing some aggravation along the way.

The Sony Cyber-shot RX100 III is an overall great camera that delivers significant improvements over the RX100 II, but not everyone will think it's worth the extra cost.

A great electronic viewfinder that doesn't increase the size of the svelte Sony Cyber-shot RX100 III is one of the camera's highlights. Plus it offers excellent performance, photo and video quality.

The camera shuts down when you retract the viewfinder, the autofocus system could be more consistent, and it has poor battery life.

At $800, Sony's RX100 III is a very expensive point-and-shoot, but it's an excellent buy if you have the cash to spare.

You won't be making movies with RX100 III, but it can shoot video that's perfectly fine for online posting. A clip of a piano player in the park shot at 1080p and 60 frames per second showed smooth movement, as you can see in people walking by in the background.

To be honest, if you just want to capture great street scenes, either can works. However, the RX100 Mk III is what we'd recommend to the street photography crowd. In fact, you'll probably never miss a shot.

Sony's RX series of compact cameras have wowed us with their small size and excellent image quality since the introduction of the original RX100 . But that type of quality doesn't come cheap, especially in a pocketable form factor.

This really is a superb camera. I owned the Mark 1 and Mark 2, and the 3 is miles better. The much faster lens and superb OLED viewfinder just rock.
