Low light supremo

I bought this camera for a specific job, which involved filming bioluminescent Dinoflagellate algae - the camera lived up to its reputation, with a maximum ISO of 409,600 it captured the brief flashes of light emitted by the algae.

Sony Alpha A7s Mark II review

Sony's Alpha A7s Mark II is a full-frame mirrorless camera that's optimized for 4k video, particularly in very low light. Sony's essentially taken the 12 Megapixel sensor of the original A7s Mark I and slotted it into the body of the A7r Mark II.

Great quality 4k video; Clean up to 6400 ISO and still good at 25600 ISO, Capable of shooting in extremely low light at up to 409600 ISO, Very good 1080p options including APSC crop and 120p slow motion, S-Log 2 and 3 for subsequent grading.

Contrast-based AF not great at tracking moving subjects; No APSC / Super-35 crop option for 4k video; Built-in IS only provided one or two stops in my tests; Small dials and buttons.

Sony A7S II Review

Sony's A7S II is the ultimate low-light shooter for night owls.

Excellent 12.2MP full-frame stills; Top-notch 4K; 120-fps Full HD videos; Whopping 409,600 ISO; 14-bit compressed/uncompressed RAW

Very noisy at high ISOs; Not ideal for action; Expensive

Sony Alpha A7S II

The Sony Alpha A7S II is a full-frame camera with a difference. Where its brother the A7R II uses a 42-megapixel sensor for massive amounts of detail, this camera pares the resolution all the way down to 12 megapixels to radically improve low-light performance.

Great low-light performance; Excellent for video; Much-improved ergonomics

Limited detail capture among full-frame cameras; Unimpressive burst performance

Sony Alpha 7S II Review

Sony continues to take a three-camera approach with its second-generation full-frame mirrorless system. At one end of the spectrum sits the high-resolution, 42-megapixel Alpha 7R II ($1,198.00 at Amazon) , and at the other is the 12-megapixel Alpha 7S II ($2999.99, body only). The low pixel count goes a long way to improve image quality at extremely high ISOs—the camera can be set as high as ISO 409600—and also improves the quality of 4K video. Our Editors' Choice for full-frame mirrorless cameras is still the Alpha 7 II ($1,198.00 at Amazon) . This third musketeer in the group features a 24-megapixel image sensor, a low price, and solid all-around performance, but it doesn't support 4K video capture. DesignThe Alpha 7S II shares the same physical design, interface, and controls as its two twin siblings. For information on how the camera handles, you can refer to our review of the Alpha 7R II. Similar Products 4.5 Outstanding Sony Alpha 7 II ...

The Sony Alpha 7S II full-frame mirrorless camera excels at 4K video and high ISO imaging, but it's priced at a premium.

Full-frame 4K video recording; Incredible high ISO image quality; 5fps burst shooting; In-body image stabilization; Hinged rear display; Sharp EVF; Dust- and moisture-resistant design

Expensive; 12-megapixel resolution can be limiting; Omits PC sync socket; Overly sensitive eye sensor; No built-in flash

Read various reviews of whining on small buttons and difficult menus, but I myself think that the menus, you learn that at any other camera at any time, and the buttons feel solid and distinct. Coming from Canon or Nikon, you learn about, nothing more to it.

Excellent equipment!

Still under test and adaptation, I came across an excellent camera, but not only for low lights, but for various types of footage. 4k with lots of definition

VidPro Cage isn't made for Sony A7SII

It's just fine. Everything is as good as it seems in the picture BUT de VidPro Cage doesn't fix for the A7SII. The battery gate can't fully open, so you got to uninstall the gate or just unscrew every time you have to change battery, that's sucks.

After the introduction of the Sony Alpha 7 II and Sony Alpha 7R II it was only a matter of time before Sony introduced the update to the Alpha 7S, its 12Mp, low light and video-centric model which has become popular in the film and television industry.

Super-high ISO ISO 409,600 maximum; Internal 4K video recording; AF system good in low light

Video record button not ideally placed; Expensive and specialist; 8-bit rather than 10 or 12-bit video
