Sigma 65mm F2 DG DN Contemporary Review

The Sigma 65mm F2 DG DN Contemporary ($699) is one of the inaugural entries in the company's I Series, a line of slim, quality prime lenses for full-frame mirrorless cameras. Its focal length is an odd one, netting an angle of view tighter than typical standard angle optics, but falling a bit shy of being considered a portrait lens. Photographers who prefer a slightly narrower view of the world will be rewarded, though—the lens is exquisitely built, with optics to match. It's an Editors' Choice winner, not just because of its unique angle of view, but also because of its exemplary performance.I Series Sigma places the 65mm F2 DG DN Contemporary in its I Series, a family of built-for-mirrorless prime lenses. It's constructed with a slightly vintage mindset—the aluminum barrel and knurled control rings set it apart from the crowd. Most lenses have moved to polycarbonate construction, which is still plenty professional and durable, but with a distinctly different feel. It's on sale ...

The Sigma 65mm F2 DG DN Contemporary sits somewhere between standard angle and portrait focal lengths, ideal for photographers who find typical standard lenses a bit too wide.

Stunning industrial design; Light and compact; High-resolution optics; Aperture control ring; Full-frame coverage; Available for L-mount and Sony mirrorless systems

Not fully weather sealed; Breathing effect visible during focus

Sigma 65mm F/2 DG DN Contemporary Lens for Leica L - Brand New review

Make no mistake, this is a beautiful lens that has a really strong performance. Unusually, the logic applied to the design of the optics seems to have fallen slightly less comfortably when we look at some of the minor, niggling, more general design issues.

Outstanding sharpness, Low central CA, Excellent flare resistance, All metal construction, Quality manufacture, Pleasant bokeh, 3-year guarantee, Dust-resistant and splashproof

Edge CA obvious, Caution needed with the magnetic lens cap, No A setting lock on the aperture ring, Click stops cannot be switched off, Filter size not consistent across I range, No depth of field scale

Sigma 65mm F/2 DG DN Contemporary Lens for Leica L - Brand New review

Of course if our assessment is to remain positive that kind of compromise must pay off - how does the situation look in the case of the Sigma C 2/35? We are pleased to say it looks well enough.

solid and metal casing,, excellent image quality in the frame centre,, very good image quality on the edge of the APS-C sensor,, good image quality on the edge of full frame,, moderate spherical aberration,, sensible correction of longitudinal chromatic aberration,, negligible lateral chromatic...

monstruous vignetting on full frame,, distortion could have been lower with such an angle of view.

Sigma 65mm F/2 DG DN Contemporary Lens for Leica L - Brand New review

The Sigma 35mm F2 DG DN is a great medium-wideangle prime lens for all types of photographers. While it has some fringing and a bit of distortion, it largely makes up for those with pleasingly smooth out-of-focus areas as well as excellent handling and build quality.

Weddings and events, travel, environmental portraiture

Architectural photographers wanting minimal distortion

Sigma 65mm F/2 DG DN Contemporary Lens for Leica L - Brand New review

The Sigma 35mm f2 DG DN is a mild wide prime lens for full-frame mirrorless cameras and available in Sony-e and Leica L-mounts. It becomes Sigma’s second 35mm to get me really excited about shooting this focal length, following the f1.2 ART.

Sigma 65mm F/2 DG DN Contemporary Lens for Leica L - Brand New review

The Apple iPhone 14 isn’t a huge upgrade on the iPhone 13, yet it still is a great phone with a top camera, good battery life and all the iOS benefits.

Clever safety features, Very good battery life, Reliable camera, Fun colours, You’ve got an ageing iPhone: If you’re on an iPhone 11 or older, then the changes here will make a notable difference.

Stuck on a 60Hz display, Minimal differences to the iPhone 13, You’ve got an iPhone 13: The changes from Apple’s previous phone aren’t enough to warrant an upgrade this year.

The Apple iPhone 14 is no match for the just-released iPhone 14 Pro, but if you ignore that, it’s one of the most effective phones around.

Great cameras, front and back, Fast performance, Good battery life, Innovative safety features

Design too familiar, Some average features

Sigma 65mm F/2 DG DN Contemporary Lens for Leica L - Brand New review

Apple's latest non-Pro iPhone is superb - it's just that it's strikingly similar to last year's effort.

Still an incredible smartphone, Brilliant battery life gets a bit better, Excellent camera system gets a bit better

Last year’s Pro hardware, Wireless charging slow by modern standards, No USB-C; it’s now well overdue
