Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM review by makcv113

I bought this recently because I wanted a 50mm equivalent for my Canon 40D. It was either this or the Samyang 35mm 1.4 for video, but since I was a photography guy first, I just the Sigma with its AF. Bokeh is okay. There is distortion. I also have the Canon 50mm 1.8 that I used to use more often.

Fast aperture; semi fast focusing for my needs; sharp

Soft wide open; smallest aperture is f16

Good fast lens.

Needed a lens for low lighting conditions. Can't get much faster than f/1.4 ! Sigma makes pretty good third party lenses . I had several with my old Minolta film cameras back in the day and they worked great. This is my first Sigma for a DSLR. Took it out for a test run yesterday.

There is really no beating a prime lens for low light photography. Even the fastest zoom lenses are never faster than F2.8 (aside from the two very impressive and very expensive Pro level zooms from Olympus that are F2.0) and such, the best bet for dim rooms and night shots is a real quick prime...

First and foremost, the headline feature of this lens is the exceptionally fast 1.4 aperture; Wide open you will be able to shoot with shutter speeds 4 times faster than even the quick zoom lenses with their 2.8 apertures, The image quality is very good all things considered.

As expected, the lens is a bit soft wide open, the problem is really only apparent however towards the edges; It is however well within acceptable tolerances, The focus on my example back focused by a few millimeters at a distance of about a foot and a half.

Raises the value of your crop sensor

Last year I made the switch to full frame and parked Sigma's 50mm F1.4 Art lens on my 5Diii. I thought full frame was the most amazing thing, and I could never go back. Then I started doing a little bit of video work, so I dusted off my SL1 to use as camera 2.

My new favorite lens...

I wasn't even looking for a new lens when I stumbled on a review of this one while enjoying my Canon

Great build quality; perfect focus; fast and quiet

There isn't a 20mm 1.4 at the same price level

Tack sharp wide open with fast accurate auto focus.

I have used this lens for portraits, landscapes and an 8 image panorama and it has produced the goods for me every time. Tack sharp with lovely fall off in the portraits and great detail in the landscapes and panorama. I can't fault it.

Durable; Fast; accurate, quiet auto focus; Great Features; Great Picture Quality

Construction good, optics less so

There was enough chromatic aberration on this lens to stop me bothering to use it.
