The History of Sharp
Tokuji Hayakawa founded the company in 1912, and he took the name from one of his inventions ?the Ever Sharp mechanical pencil. They were in the business of making pencils up until 1923. A large earthquake destroyed the business, and they had to move to Osaka. At that point, they started to make radio sets rather than pencils. The first of these sets went on sale in 1925. They continued to look for other ways of innovating in the field of electronics and adding to their business. By 1953, they started to produce television sets, something for which they would become well known in the future.
In 1964, Sharp produced the first transistor calculator. The cost for this product at the time was $1,400. When they made the device, they had no experience in computing devices, and it took seven years from the inception to the launch of the product. They found these to be profitable, though, and they started to make other calculators in the subsequent years. They also created the first pocket calculator, which was very popular despite costing $300.
In the 1980s, they had a relationship with Nintendo, the gaming company. They developed and manufactured the C1 NES TV, Twin Famicom, and more, which are collector items today. One of the most impressive firsts from Sharp is the fact that they were the company behind the very first commercial camera phone. They did this with the J-SH04 in Japan in 1997.
Sharp bought a controlling share of Pioneer Corporation in 2007, and two years later they decided to create the Pioneer Digital Design and Manufacturing Corporation, a venture that combined both company optical businesses.
