Review: Samsung's T3 portable SSD brings the sexy to storage

For those who really need a portable drive with very fast transfer speeds PLUS easy portability and don't mind paying for those luxuries, portable SSDs are been a good option. They're still a bit rare, largely because they're not cheap.

I like having files stored in at least two places and was running out of room on my SSD in my Dell PC. This Samsung drive is a great second file location. It works fast and is password protected.

Samsung Portable SSD T3

We selected two SSD- and two disk-based portable storage products to compare against Samsung's Portable SSD T3 2TB. Kingston's HyperX Max 3.0 was one of the original portable SSDs. Although it's older, it represents the performance of several other products launched during SandForce's heyday.

The new Portable SSD T3 with a metal structure makes the drive very sturdy and less susceptible to damage; The performance is very good, compared with most mechanical, platter-based products sold today

The price is the obvious problem for most users, and we really hoped this series would see a major cost reduction; Real-world file transfer performance is lower than we expected from a product with superior synthetic performance

Samsung Portable SSD T3 1TB

Much like the original T1, the new Samsung T3 proved itself with internal SATA SSD-like results, sustaining a throughput of 390MB/s when downloading (reading) a single large compressed file and 300MB/s when uploading (writing).

Samsung Portable SSD T3

Conclusion The Samsung Portable SSD T3 is an excellent choice if you need to carry or copy a library's worth of data in a device that will fit in your front pants pocket. It is certainly pricey, but if you're a power user, you will want nothing less, especially if you need to work on 4K or HD video...

Speedy performance; USB-C port; Mac, Windows PC, and Android compatible; Drop tested to 6 feet; Three-year warranty

Pricey; USB-C-to-USB-C cable not included

Samsung Portable SSD T3

A portable hard disk is all well and good, but their slow speed and vulnerability to drops makes them a liability. Small flash drives are similarly vulnerable, and have the added disadvantage of being incredibly easy to lose.

Stylish design; Great performance; Convenience of USB Type-C connection

Only USB 3.1 Gen; 1, More expensive than a normal 2.5in drive, Not waterproof or ruggedised

Samsung's T3 is the fastest and sleekest external drive available today.

Handheld external SSD; Up to 2TB of storage; Average read speeds of 442MBps; Almost as small as a thumb drive

Short cord included in the box; Extremely high price point

Over a year ago we saw Samsung expand with the T1 creating a new category of extremely compact portable storage that offered fantastic speed. While at the time of testing we attested the T1 was virtually unrivaled, in the last twelve months we've seen companies attack this new category aggressively.

Small and very high-quality housing; Type-C connector; Very high performance; Large storage options

Expensive; No USB 3.1
